So I'm curious about how this actually works. I've read what players handbook says and the way I interpret it is that if a spell says Components:V, S, M (red dragon scale) as long as you perform one of those you can cast it. or do you have to have the scale and perform the Somatic and verbal portions too?
Per Player's Handbook: Components that you must have all the components listed for a spell, or you are unable to cast it. So in the case above it would be Verbal and Somatic and Material (red dragon scale)
There is more flexibility on the Material part. Either you have the explicit material or you can use a Component pouch or a spell casting focus (holy symbol, orb, etc) and it will cover any material component that does not have a listed cost. But it still follows the same rule above; you must have it to cast the spell, along with any other required components (verbal or somatic).
Also if a spell requires both material and somatic components, you can use 1 hand for both instead of using one hand for each component.
To add to this: It's finicky, but technically if a spell has a somatic component, but does NOT have a material component, your hand holding your wand or other focus is not considered free for the somatic component.

Canto alla vita alla sua bellezza ad ogni sua ferita ogni sua carezza!
I sing to life and to its tragic beauty To pain and to strife, but all that dances through me The rise and the fall, I've lived through it all!

Correct. Thank you. I have spent an entire thread arguing with someone over this before.

Yeah, this rule hampered my Hexblade/Swashbuckler until I got Warcaster.

I hope this helps.
