100$ to a SP sounds really high, especially when you think about say, a Greatsword that costs 50 GP, that's 50k! Now thinking about it, it depends where the transaction would be happening, the value of something, and if WOtC plans to release economy and stock markets into D&D.
Any reference to the price of gold here isn't really relevant, if gold s more common in the world of D&D (or has less demand) then the price would be lower. As someone pointed out the ratio of the price of copper, silver and gold are very different to our own.
There is also a very big difference is the cost of survival in the D&D world and a modest lifestyle. You could consider a modest lifestyle as $50,000 a year, comfortable at $100,000 wealthy at $200,000 and aristocratic at $1m (1GP = $140) but this would mean the poor are getting by on $10,000 a year and a squalid lifestyle can be had for half that.
Also some things in the world of D&D are relatively far more expensive than we would expect. A ream of paper (500 sheets) costs 100gp (2sp a sheet) or several month salary for nearly everyone, a glass bottle is 2gp but a tankard is only 2cp so presumably most liquid containers will be made of metal or pottery, most people would just never see things like paper and glass.
