I'm new to DND and will be DM'ing a campaign for a group of also-new players. I'm nervous but excited simultaneously. I do have a basic question that I cant seem to find a straightforward answer to in my reference books or online:
If I'm making and attack roll against a player on behalf of a monster with a melee weapon, am I adding my Strength Mod and the "+X to hit" to my roll? Or just the "+X to Hit"?
Example:
I have a stat block for a Knight. His Strength is 16 (+3), and his Greatsword Melee Weapon Attack has a "+5 to Hit" in its description. Does my Knight get +8 to his attack roll (+3 from his Strength Mod and +5 from is Melee Attack) or is the "+5 to Hit" based on his Strength Mod plus an assumed proficiency that isnt listed on his stat block?
Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
Hey All,

You use the "+5 to hit". The +5 equates to +3 str bonus and +2 proficiency bonus
EDIT: the +3 str bonus only comes into play if the knight has a reason to make a str check, like to escape a grapple.

You only use the "+X to hit".
You don't need to worry about doing any math to monster stat blocks, they tell you exactly what modifier to add to rolls.
