Sup y’all! Ok so i just leveled up my paladin to 4th level but I want to multi class into a barbarian . I fulfill the prerequisites but I’m unsure if I have to give up my 4th level to get the new class or not. Or can I start multiclassing into my new class no problem? Any help is appreciated thank you
If you just hit level 4 and chose Paladin for your fourth level - you'll need to wait until fifth level to take a Barbarian level and become a 4 Paladin + 1 Barbarian = 5th level character.
If your DM is okay with it you could delevel paladin back to 3 to take a level in Barbarian but you would lose out on the ASI/Feat because they are given by class level and not character level.
The math goes how Emmber described it. If you were a level 3 paladin, gained a level, and want to go barbarian, then you don't get the level 4 paladin features.
