Here's to hoping there is a simple answer to this...
I understand the mechanic of Advantage/Disadvantage, but, as the topic of the thread implies, can one outweigh the other?
Here is my example: A group of kobolds, let's say four, surround (each within five feet) a single hero. Per the kobold's "Pack Tactics," each one would have Advantage on attack rolls against the hero, since each of the little beasties is within five feet. However, this battle is taking place at mid-day, under the bright light of the sun, which causes the kobold's "Sunlight Sensitivity" to be in effect, which forces Disadvantage on the little beasties' attack rolls...
My question, then, is: does this scenerio mean that the Disadvantage simply cancels out the Advantage, making for a typical single die roll, or does the effect of the kobold's "Sunlight Sensitivity" truly make for Disadvantage on their attack rolls, even though they would otherwise gain Advantage from "Pack Tactics" if it simply weren't so dang bright outside?
Regardless of the source of advantage and disadvantage, if you have both, that means you have neither and therefore you roll a single d20. Even if you have multiple advatages (let's say for the sake of example, pack tatics and invisibility) and only one disadvantage (sunlight sensitivity), you have neither as well.
That's how I had figured it'd resolve. Thanks for the quick response!
Yeah, I'm pretty sure filcat is an artificial intelligence that became sentient when the D&D Beyond servers came online. OR They are like the Borg or the Brood (or any other hive-mind creature - maybe a Mind Flayer) and there are multiple "people" posting under the one name.
Those are the only two situations I can think of that allow him/her/them to post as much as he/she/they do(es)
“It is a better world. A place where we are responsible for our actions, where we can be kind to one another because we want to and because it is the right thing to do instead of being frightened into behaving by the threat of divine punishment.” ― Oramis, Eldest by Christopher Paolini.
Now filecat will have to eliminate you... wait. Does that mean I'm next?!?!
This is up there in movies with the hero who confronts the villian alone in the room and says "I know you're the one who did it! Did I tell anyone about this? No of course not, I came to confront you! Why are you smiling?"
"So, Lone Starr, now you see that evil will always triumph, because good is dumb."
In my group we have started to talk about letting the disadvantages and advantages add up (so if you have 1 thing that gives disadvantage and 2 that gives advantage you have advantage). The idea being that it can make for more tacticall and thought out play seeing as one can try to outweigh and consider combat situations. Biggest issue might be that there is not that many things that give disadvantage I think.
Pjotor - If I were DMing the local game, I'd probably do similar, since I like the idea of adding a little extra option to what's going on.
The main reason for my question was to get clarification of the core ruling, because our group is running a module under the Adventure League standards, and our DM seems rule happy ONLY when it benefits what the players are facing off against.
