Is there a table for the rate of fire for ranged and thrown weapons? and if so what page and book is it in? I have looked through the PHB and DMG and can't find any such thing. I remember AD&D had a table thrown weapons were normally one per melee round, darts were three per melee round and arrows were two per melee round, crossbows depended on how big/heavy the crossbow was. Thanks.
The number of attacks you can make is one per action. The Extra Attack feature can override that, giving you up to four attacks per action. This applies to ranged and thrown weapons as well as melee weapons.
The loading property of some weapons makes it impossible for you to make more than one attack per round using that weapon, the rest of the time is used to load it. A level 20 fighter (without the Crossbow Master feat) would only be able to make one attack with a hand crossbow, regardless of the Extra Attack (3) capstone feature.
The other restriction on thrown weapons is the ability to draw them. The new UA includes a "Thrown Weapon Fighting" style that allows you to draw a thrown weapon as part of the attack, but without that fighting style, you're severely limited in how many thrown attacks you can make.
You are limited by a couple factors, first and foremost each character can only attack once with a weapon unless they have a class feature that grants them extra attacks (i.e Fighters at level 5). Second you are limited by whether a weapon has the Loading Property:
Loading. Because of the time required to load this weapon, you can fire only one piece of ammunition from it when you use an action, bonus action, or reaction to fire it, regardless of the number of attacks you can normally make.
This loading property however can be overcame if the option Feats rule is in place by taking a feat like Crossbow Expert that allows you to ignore the loading properties of crossbows.
And then of course the obvious limiting factor would be Ammunition, if you only have 1 dagger you can only throw one dagger.
5e is much simpler. It starts at once per attack and only increases if you have the extra attack class feature or something else allowing more attacks. And type of weapon rarely matters unless it has the loading property.

Partway through the quest for absolute truth.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks all
The only exception would be if you're using the Critical Role gunslinger class, but that's subject to DM approval.
