To my understanding with the temporary hit points don't stack rule, this means you can't already have temporary hit points and gain more from an additional effect. My question lies in what if you have none, and an event triggers you to gain temporary hit points from two different sources?
For example, a monk with touch of death multiclassed with a warlock that has the dark one's blessing. These temporary hit points are both triggered from you slaying an enemy (assuming it's in melee range for TOD). I would imagine you gain the benefit of the two instantaneously, so would this be an example of an acceptable case?
Only one of the temp hit point values will apply, and the monk in your example would pick only one of the temporary hit values. Typically, the one that applies the highest value.

Any time you could gain temporary hit points, you simply decide to retain the temporary hit points you currently have, or swap them for the new temporary hit points you could gain.
If effect A would grant you 5 temporary hit points and effect B would grant you 8 temporary hit points, you just have to decide which of those you want.
The same applies if you already have temporary hit points. If you have 3 temporary hit points and an effect grants you 5 more you have the option of receiving the 5 hit points but if you do they replace the existing ones (the can't stack rule means you don't get 8).
