Hey all. I haven't played since AD&D days and am confused on some of the new things.
Combat back then we used Thac0 and the armor classes were the lowest number the better. I had a warrior that had a -3 AC.
My question: Is AC the higher the number the better now, and how do you roll to hit? If a character has a 16AC, do i roll a D20 with modifiers and if that number is greater than 16, is the attack successful?
Inititive is another thing as we used to all roll D20's and the highest number goes first. Is this still the case?

Thanks for helping this 5e noob
Pretty much the entire game is roll d20 add modifiers and try to hit a target number (Difficulty Class, think Armour Class to beat anything), for anything that has a succeed/fail outcome.
So if you want to climb a wall, you describe to the DM what your PC wants to do, if there is a chance of failure the DM will ask for an ability check (in this case Athletics, modified by Str) and set a target (eg easy DC10, Medium 15, Hard 20 etc). Roll your d20 add modifiers and if you beat the DC you're successful.

Yes, for the attack roll(d20+ modifiers) to succeed, it needs to be equal or higher than the armor class.
For the initiative, you roll a d20+DEX modifier. The highest go first and so on.
Thanks!!
