a lot of people misjudge chaotic neutral. chaotic neutral is very similar to chaotic evil, but chaotic neutral is doing because they can, not because they are evil. chaotic evil is the cartoon villain who has no reasoning for what they do, besides from that they are evil, most people just say their villain is chaotic evil, when it is probably either neutral evil or lawful evil. chaotic good is a lot more common than most people think. did your character commit a crime to kill who they view as evil? chaotic good. classes that are commonly these chaotic alignments include barbarians, bards, and rouges.
Chaotic neutral gets its bad rap from players who were told they couldn't be evil but still wanted to murder NPCs and steal from the party. So they say "I'm not evil, just chaotic."
Chaotic evil is kind of difficult to explain. It is hard to justify (for normal people) a character that wants to ruin everything they see for reasons that definitely make sense to them. Most cartoon villains have deeper plans than that.
Yeah, I'm playing a chaotic neutral character right now and they're a pretty decent person! "Chaotic" because they're a rogue and don't give a fig about the laws or customs of the land they're in. "Neutral" because they're not the sort of person to go out of their way to be a do-gooder and probably won't undertake a major quest unless something's in it for them, but, like, they're not going to go around murdering random people or something. They're more likely to help someone in need than to rob them.
I'd say that "chaotic neutral" character is pretty far from "chaotic evil". Various alignments are pretty broad and can cover a lot of play.
Chaotic because he's still young and sometimes behaves pretty childish, also if he encounters something that's "wrong" he won't just accept logical reasons* why it's okay.
*context: we had some guy who supports some evil cult, that wants to destroy the world, because it seems benificial to him and his family. My druid got furious. Pity he doesn't have the Gust cantrip, it would've been so in character to just blow all that guy's papers all over the room. xDD

I have a Chaotic Good Druid.
