We are having a discussion about taking the magic initiate feat as a fighter. If one were to take this feat, how would one cast the spell as the fighter does not have any spell slots. After building a character on DND beyond, we saw that it does note that the spell had been used if you click on the use button. However, as the feat does not grant a spell slot and the class does not have a slot either, would the fighter in question be able to cast said spell regardless? This is specifically with regards to the 1st level spell and not the cantrips. Any advice would be appreciated.
The example used to negate this feat for melee build is when using war caster, would casting a spell when in an attack of opportunity situation use one of the caster's spell slots as it does not explicitly state that it would o wouldn't in it's description.
War Caster
Prerequisite: The ability to cast at at least one spell
You have practiced casting spells in the midst of combat, learning techniques that grant you the following benefits:
You have advantage on Constitution saving throws that you make to maintain your concentration on a spell when you take damage.
You can perform the somatic components of spells even when you have weapons or a shield in one or both hands.
When a hostile creature's movement provokes an opportunity attack from you, you can use your reaction to cast a spell at the creature, rather than making an opportunity attack. The spell must have a casting time of 1 action and must target only that creature.
I believe you could cast the spell from Magic Initiate with your AoO thanks to War Caster, but it would still be limited to the once per long rest restriction. Because War Caster says "The ability to cast one spell" and not "Spellcasting or Pact Magic class feature" you should still be able to do it.
I’m not 100% sure what you’re actually asking, but it sounds like: “Can I use War Caster to cast a spell I have due to Magic Initiate?” and the answer to that question is yes. Nothing in War Caster requires that you cast the spell from a spell slot.
The spell cast with war caster has the usual costs of casting that spell (spell slot, limited casts per day, etc). Magic initiate lets you cast the level 1 spell it grants once per day without using a slot.
Magic Initiate is similar to racial traits such as the Tiefling's Infernal Legacy.
You know the thaumaturgy cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the hellish rebuke spell as a 2nd-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the darkness spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
It doesn't matter whether you have spell slots to cast these spells, since you have an innate, but limited, ability to cast them. You don't have to use the warcaster provision regarding AoOs, it's just a possibility. If you wanted to cast a spell one time with your once per long rest spell and then normal AoOs, that would be fine. You could also choose a melee spell attack or a spell save cantrip to use the other times. Booming Blade is a common choice from the wizard, sorcerer, and warlock spell lists, particularly if your spellcasting stat isn't a very high.
Magic Initiate does not allow a character to cast the 1st level spell selected at will. By baseline, the feature has no interaction with spell slots at all; it is simply a spell that the character can cast once per long rest.
War Caster does not allow a character to cast any leveled spells at will. It simply provides for more circumstances in which a character can cast their spells in combat, but it does not change the requirements for casting (resource consumption) at all. If you choose to cast the 1st level spell you learned from Magic Initiate through the option granted by War Caster, that counts as your 1/day usage of that spell.

The fighter will be able to cast the spell once, even without spell slots. Once they do, they have to take a long rest before they can cast it again.
