I don't follow. Explain exactly how you intend to use Clone, Magic Jar, and a phylactery.
l have no plans to use magic jar. the only jar being used in this is the jar/urn/coffin the clone is being grown in/busting out of if the lich soul leaves the body and goes into the clone as its phylactery.
in other words, the clone IS the phylactery. (if l am right, but finding out if a clone could be a phylactery is why l made this)
I thought that the Lich's soul was always in the phylactery as a vessel. It's not something that escapes into the phylactery upon the physical death of the Lich. As Liches may choose non-traditional phylacteries (with tradition being an amulet with a small box according to WotC), I suppose a living vessel would be possible, but the Lich will still reform 5ft. from the phylactery and not explode out of it as explained in Basic Rules. (Beside, exploding out of the phylactery would destroy the phylactery if the clone was the phylactery.)
To try to achieve the same result, I suppose something small inside the clone could be the phylactery allowing the reformation to occur within 5ft from it, which could be inside the rest of the clone. It shouldn't be something that is destroyed with the rest of the clone. Also, the phylactery would need to be relocated after destroying the clone since its hiding place would be revealed.
Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
I would say a clone cannot be a phylactery. A phylactery contains the Lich's soul and a clone can only contain a soul if the original body dies. I suppose you could interpret "dies" differently. When a caster becomes a Lich they place their soul in a phylactery and become undead. Their body may change to be skeletal but they do not "die." When the body is destroyed it is reformed next to the phylactery. Destroyed would not be the same as "dies" in my opinion.
I suppose you could try to put a phylactery inside a clone but the clone would still remain an inert vessel.
could a clone in a clone jar be used as a lich's phylactery, and lf so,now that the soul is in the clone, does that mean there is 2 of them?
(asking cause l had a idea for a plot, but wanted to know if l would have to handwave/homebrew)
edit :homebrew it is.

welp, looks like RAW has "failed me" so it looks like l have to turn to homebrew. -_0_-
