My question is is simple does a reaction spell burn a spell slot when sued as reaction.
Example Level 1 Wizard has 2 spell slots and has Shield prepared. Would using Shield as a defense use up one of the two spells slots when used as reaction to an attack. My thought is yes, but I am new player/DM so just making sure so I can explain it properly.
A spell, always consumes a spell slot unless you have a specific feature that does not.
If you use a reaction to cast a spell of any kind, weather it is a held action of a prepared spell in case X happens, or like you have said using Shield.
All spells other than Cantrips consume a spell slot when cast, except in some specific cases...
If it is a spell cast as part of a unique feature (such as racial spells, spells gained through feats, etc.), or if it is a spell cast as a Ritual (which is limited to specific spells that have the ritual tag). Some classes even grant leveled spells that can be cast a limited number of times, or even certain leveled spells that can be cast at will (Warlock gets a number of these as Eldritch Invocations)
