Sorry for the ignorant question. I'm a relatively new bard with Healing Word. The rules seem to state this can't be cast in addition to a regular level spell (cantrip only), but I was under the impression that a regular spell is cast as "an action". Shouldn't a bonus action be something that is cast in addition to said action? Kinda makes Healing Word feel underwhelming.
Bonus action spells are fast enough that you can still cast an easy spell (i.e. a cantrip) with your Action. They're not fast enough that you can cast another leveled spell.
Being able to get a heal off and still deal damage on the same turn is powerful enough on its own, especially given that D&D's combat mechanics make it so that on any given turn, the optimal course of action is almost always to attack.
