So planning on starting an Eberron Campain and as I read through the rules It occurs to me that there are classes and spells which allow players to become elementals, either temporarily or permanently. That being said, Eberron has this whole elemental binding mechanic which involves traping elementals and binding them to machinery and ships. I realize this question is probably something the DM decides but I am curious to know what the raw rules would say about a Druid shape-changing into an elemental and becoming bound by a dragon shard? What would happen if the time of their shape change ended while bound? Would the binding break or would they be trapped? What about the spell true polymorph? I realize this isn't a big deal but I am interested in hearing any thoughts on this. Thanks.
Elemental binding doesn’t have any explicit mechanical rules because it’s an extremely classified trade secret that the gnomes of Zilargo guard zealously. It’s absolutely not the kind of thing that any adventuring party would encounter casually.
It could make an interesting set piece encounter if the antagonists are aforementioned gnomes and one of the PCs is a Moon druid who’s made a name for themselves wrecking gnome shit in elemental form, but the mechanics there would be the DM’s responsibility to work out. Personally, I’d say successfully binding someone turned into an elemental could prevent them from voluntarily changing back, but it couldn’t prevent the reversal of the change when other conditions are met, like the polymorph caster dropping concentration or the duration of the effect expiring.
If I were to try and describe the binding rule, I would make it take a long time to do - as in several days of ritual magic. I could see it taking hours for a small ship, but I would expect days.
Ah, got it so the DM of that campaign gets to make up the rules of the binding ritual if it ever becomes relevant... That being said, if the polymorph caster was the one that became the elemental, what would happen then when the duration of the effect did expire? Would the bound character simply be expelled from the kyber crystal the instant the spelled ended? The book suggested that Kyber crystals can bind other things as well.
Yes. And most importantly, if it was a small ship it could be role played for a couple of travel adventures. Perhaps they have to find a MacGuffin to end thebinding. Will the Druid even want to leave his new shape? Will he die if it is destroyed, or will he return to Druid form?

Makes sense. If the DM did that then the risk of getting bound would be severely mitigated.

That would be... Interesting. having a Flying Boat in the party. Wonder how you would even Role Play that.
