I just made a Tabaxi Ranger yesterday, and I noticed he has a +7 to his initiative (which given the group I'm running almost certainly means he'll be going first in every combat). My question is how? I get that initiative uses the Dex modifier, but his is only +4. Can anyone tell me where the other 3 points came from? I hear it has something to do with race or class bonuses, but I can't find anything specific. Thanks.
Well, excluding multiclassing, you are probably a level 3 or higher Gloomstalker (see Dread Ambusher feature) where you get to add your Wisdom modifier to your initiative.
A swashbuckler rogue at level 3+ adds charisma to their initiative
A gloomstalker ranger at level 3+ adds wisdom to their initiative
A war wizard at level 2(?)+ adds intelligence to their initiative
A bard at level 2+ with Jack of All Trades adds 1/2 of their proficiency to initiative
In your case, I would guess that you made a level 3+ gloomstalker ranger and are adding both your dex and wisdom modifiers to initiative. If your dex is 18 then you are either using rolled stats or are level 4+ so gloomstalker would easily account for it.
For even higher initiative and immunity to being surprised, add the Alert feat :)

LOL...I didn't even see the link on my monitor to the character, and took him at his word.
This is a rogue, not a ranger. It is part of your Swashbuckler archetype. See your features list:
Rakish Audacity SCAG, pg. 47 - You add your CHA modifier (+3) to your initiative rolls.
Yeah, sorry. I'm still new to the game, and the Ranger in the game I run plays more like a Rogue, so I get the two confused in my head sometimes. Thanks for the clarification.

It's this. The swashbuckler is also in XGTE. Your dex is +4 and your charisma is +3.
