Hi everyone. 1st post and 1st time back in DnD for 20 years. Decided to re-up after a couple of my chums went through a hard time and I thought DnD would be the perfect way to get them out of their funk. Its working so far and we are all having a good time.
Currently playing as a Dragonborn Sorcerer with red ancestry and I have the 15ft cone fire breath attack. My question is, if I wanted to could I breathe that as an attack straight up or down? For example if I was surrounded by twig blights in squares next to me could I breathe straight down enveloping those things and myself in flame.
I think you would have to be above them for you to be able to use your dragon breath straight down and have the cone of fire to encompass the guy to your left as well as the guy to your right.

"Not all those who wander are lost"
Straight up and down works, but you can never include your own space. Just as when you breath forward you get: (Dragonborn = d, Breath weapon = B)
BBBBB
.BBB.
..B..
.1d2.
Notice that the Breath weapon starts 5 ft from you, not including the ally in position 1 or 2.
Thanks folks. Much appreciated.
