Sorry if this has already been addressed I couldn't find it. I've just started playing a Blood Hunter and have just made level 3. I will be going profane soul and while perusing the text for the Blood Hunter i came across the special Multiclassing rule
"Blood Hunter Multiclassing with Warlock
If multiclassing Order of the Profane Soul with Warlock levels, add a third of your blood hunter levels (rounded down) to your Warlock level and consult the Warlock progression table in the Player’s Handbook for total Spell Slots, Cantrips known, and Spell Slot Level."
So my question is do you add the 1/3 each time you take a level? eg lvl 3 BH + 1 lvl Lock = lvl 2 Lock; then take again at lvl 9 would be: 2 (first dip) + 1 (lvl taken) + 3 (1/3 of lvl 9) = 6
So do you have casting capabilities of a lvl 6 Warlock?
or
If you take the dip will you passively level as your BH level goes up ie 1 warlock casting lvl per 3 levels of BH and be adding more levels at 1:1 as needed to boost this.
I'm not sure I follow what you're describing, but.... if you're asking "do I need to take another level of warlock to trigger recalculating my Blood Hunter levels?" then no? At any given point, your spell slot/cantrips knows/slot level progression on the Warlock table is found by taking [Warlock Level]+[BH Profane Soul Level/3]=X (rounded down). The order that those levels are taken in don't matter.
I’m currently doing this with my character (BH 5/Warlock 2), and when I add the passive level it increases the total level of my character. Can I only go up to level 20 as a character or can I get lvl 20 BH and have passive warlock levels added?
What is a passive level? You don't add any extra levels to your character for this multiclass, you use your actual class levels to determine what spells and slots are available. If you are a BH5/Lock 2, you are character level 7.
That 7th level character has the spells and slots available to them of a 5th level (5 + 1/3 * 2 rounded down) warlock only (3 cantrips known, with 2x 3rd level slots). No phantom levels needed.

Level 1 Warlock/Level 1 BH Profane Soul? Effective warlock table level 1.
Take 2 more BH levels, for Warlock 1/BH 3? Effective warlock table level 2.
Warlock 7/BH 4? Effective warlock table level 8.
Does that answer your question?

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.
Yeah it does thank you.
