Unless I'm over looking something or it was apart of a more recently released book: you're correct, being an artificer is the only way to get additional attunement slots.
Depending on what level party you're looking at and the style of play for the DM, you might have very few weak magic items or a number of quite powerful ones. My recommendation would be to focus on how you can use magic items creatively.
There are also a number of more overlooked weaker magic items, so look out for anything that's better than it first appears.
Worse case scenario, after you use all your party's attunement slots keep the worse attunement magic items and give them to any NPCs you have join the party or sell them for as high a price as you can, preferably with magics and charisma checks augmenting the price higher in your favor.
Hope this helps
