So I was on the sides for a combat encounter and was just listening whats going on. The rest of the party was out at sea in a small boat attacked by sharks. The bard used vicious mockery on a shark 40ft under water. The DM had them roll to see if the shark would “hear” the words through the water and the shark didnt hear it. I know there is an audible distance chart on the dm screen but there is nothing i have found that inhibits sound through water. If a judge can give their understanding of how the rules work for this it would be appreciated. Thank you
If a character casting Vicious Mockery is already underwater and can breathe underwater, VMockery would definitely work as normal as sound actually travels better underwater than through the air. However, since the PC in this case is above water, the DM can houserule that sound does not travel as well from air to water, but that is a (probably impromptu) houserule.
