I'm playing a 7 Paladin/5 Warlock. The thing that appeals to me is the knockdown from Eldritch Smite has no saving throw, thus the monster has no chance to resist it. Also since you have 2 attacks, drop your shield and use the second attack to Grapple with advantage, now that the target is prone. Your party's melee is now free to wail on it, and it needs to waste an action contesting your Grapple before it can even stand up.
I have a semantics question, only because I like to nitpick the way things are written. We all assume that it means 5 levels or Warlock. It just says "5th level, Pact of the Blade." If I have three fighter levels for Echo Knight and 3 Warlock levels for Pact of the Blade/Improved Pact of the Blade... I am technically 6th level. Shouldn't I be able to pick up Eldritch Smite. *Casts Mirror Image* "I think it's plausible." Well thanks me, I do too.
The Eldritch Invocation class feature tells us that any level requirement is referring to levels in the Warlock class:
"If an eldritch invocation has prerequisites, you must meet them to learn it. You can learn the invocation at the same time that you meet its prerequisites. A level prerequisite refers to your level in this class."
