I have recently decided to play a new elf character with the faceless background. I've talked to my DM and gotten kinda stone walled with my ideas and I've just gotten lost in it. My idea was to have a mask or masks that she changes with her personas but my DM brought up that if she were caught with it, it would be counter productive as they'd see the disguise and know or something. I'm not sure how to play this or anything. Help!
First, your persona does not have to literally be wearing a mask. You can use makeup or nothing.
The main point of this background is that your 2 personalities can not be mistaken for each other. They way you speak, the way you dress, and your body language will all be different.
Seeing one persona with the clothes of another will be only 1 of many needed clues to figure it out. For example, if your DM found a oversized Hawaiian shirt in your closet, would they automatically assume that you are Gabriel Iglesias? Likely not.
Think of it as similar to the connection between Superman and Clark Kent. No matter how paper-thin Clark's disguise is, nobody ever connects the dots. That's what the Faceless is supposed to be like.
One could also build an elaborate costume out of seemingly innocuous pieces, or if your DM is permissive, you could use shiftweave to store your Persona mask in hammerspace when not in use. One of your Shiftweave presets is regular-elf garb, another is Awesome Hero costume, and the other three can be whatever one fancies.
