Looking to do a new dark fantasy campaign, trying to figure out a good final boss. I was going to have players fight a CR 25-26 monster (Asmodeus homebrew) as a next-to-final boss, and I need something especially challenging as a finisher, particularly something gruesome or terrifying. Any Suggestions? Also, what is the most powerful canon monster in 5e?

You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.
The Demogorgon is fierce and pretty gruesome. And a high enough CR to be a challenge depending on your party.
If you want something REALLY disgusting than the Juiblex is a good choice! They might need a bit of a power boost but it comes with some fun flavor and abilities.
Those sound great, and orcus would work too. Particularly because of his "summon undead" ability, that can increase the challenge of a battle by like 300%. My idea was to have the final boss be an ally for the first half of the camppaign, bulding on the conflict between demons and devils. What I was thinking is that the party makes a pact with that demon lord to help them get into the nine hells (to rescue a member who was kidnapped by a succubus, it's going to be very exciting), and the condition is that the patron gets to be the one to kill asmodeus. But when the party ends up killing asmodeus, the patron gets mad and decides to kill them for breaking their deal.
Demogorgon, there is a reason he is the Prince Of Demons. For gruesome and terrifying, check out some of the far realms elder evils and primordial like Zargon the Returner “the original lord of the Nine Hells”, Kezef the Chaos Hound, Dendar the Night Serpent, and Father Lymic.
