Apologies, this is a real newbie question but causing confusion with the party. The Staff of Fire instructions says "you can use an action to expend 1 or more of its charges to cast one of the following spells from it, using your spell save DC..." So our wizard has a Spell Save DC at 14...so does he need to roll a D20 and get 14 and above to use the staff to fire, say a fireball, OR is it the save roll the monster will use to resist it? I know this will be very obvious to you all but for some reason we're struggling to get to grips with save rolls and when to use them.
The save DC is what the monster rolls to resist it. That roll will be modified by whatever it says in the monster stat block. For example, in the case of fireball, if the monster has a dex save modifier of +2, they add that to their roll, and would save on a 12.
Thank you for the prompt reply - well half of us kind of guessed it right and the others sowed itchy seeds of doubt! All sorted now - thank you once again.
Kind regards,
Maple Fudd
