Hi so im wanting others opinions on a interpretation of a rule in this spell.
A Large quasi-real, horse like creature appears on the ground in an unoccupied space of your choice within range. You decide the creature's appearance, but it is equipped with a saddle, bit, and bridle.
To me this means i should have full creative freedom with how i shape the image correct? As long as its large and has 4 legs correct? Im aware it doesn't change the stats and its totally still has riding horses statistics but it clearly says horse like and i determine its appearance correct? So if i wanted claws instead of hooves or a beak instead of a mouth im within my creative freedom right?
Well the dm has allowed me as a joke to make a ostrich as a mount and just flat out make a lizard mount. Also allowed me to make a mount for a comrade that was some bee cat creature. But the moment i chose to make something of my own choice they said * horse like* to me. But thanks for your input. i think the next time i get this spell im just gana ignore any flavor text. Its just a hassle to have choice, but under some1 elses influence especially if it changes nothing in game.
As a DM, I would be very generous for appearance. Stats as per the spell (Riding Horse with speed 100).
Large and horse like are the only requirements. Riding Horse says Hooves, so I would require them. But I could see a lizard with hooves, an ooze horse, an undead horse, a sea horse with hooves, a hippogriffon that refuses to fly, a rocking horse, a clockwork horse, etc.
Ah thats alota cool ideas i was thinking of a skeletal horse myself actually. Ooze horse sounds like fun also 😁 or maybe a ooze with a horse skeleton? I think i will still stick with the basic riding horse. Atleast with my current dm. I dont like the idea of having to ask for my choices, at that point it dosent really feel like my choice. Riding horse with w.e hair and mane will be my default choices unless im confident on the dm im dealing with. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond to my question thoe.
I would interpret "Horse-like" in terms of function and temperament, rather than a limitation on form.
For example, I would consider a Chocobo to be a "Horse-like" bird.
Slepnir, is the eight-legged horse ridden by Odin.
So, practically, I would say "Horse-like" means, even if it looks like a Griffon, it can't fly. A spider mount can't make venemous bites, and doesn't have a useable stinger. Regardless of what it's physical appearance is, it otherwise operates identically to a normal horse.
I suppose the "Hooves" attack in the statblock would be somewhat limiting by RAW, but then you could just tuck some hooves up inside of whatever your creature is and have them lash out... A silly work around, for a silly limitation.
Now I'm picturing those Skyrim Mods where they just plug a different model onto the horse skeleton, so whatever you choose just warps and twists to fit into a vaguely horse-shaped form.
@MemnosyneThat is how i pictured it but my dm along with most comments here believe it should atleast be horse shaped and i could get behind that but then the question becomes how horse like does it have to be and ehh its allot of hoops, simple is best with the description in my opinion. Also the gryphon assuming i was allowed to make it i could simply decide there are no wings since its just looks for this spell =p.
I would say that it can look like almost anything, but it mechanically functions as the "riding horse" statblock called for in the spell. I would probably set the limit that it needs limbs to make attacks with, even if they aren't "hooves" (they would use the attack mechanics of the "hooves" attack, except I might allow for slashing/piercing damage in lieu of bludgeoning if it made more sense for the appearance)

So if i wanted to make a Quilin (Dragon Unicorn) that looks far more lizard than horse im within my right?

@TransmorpherDDS That sounds like it would be awesome and awful and i would love to see what could be made with that XD

I’m playing a Hobgoblin Wizard and I fashioned my Phantom Steed as a Worg.
