Greetings fellow adventurers! Today I come seeking some clarification about whether there's a range of effect for the Hold Person spell.
Now, I know the spell can target humanoids within an area/range of 60ft., but could the caster then leave that area and have their target still be paralyzed?
Like, let's say a wizard was leaving a tavern late at night in the bad part of town and gets jumped by a big ass Goliath looking to mug him. Could the wizard cast hold person on his would be robber then book it? Or does he have to stay within 60ft of his target in order for the spell to stick?
Thanks in advance for your advice, and may the chests you find be filled with loot, and bereft of tongues and teeth.
If the Wizard had to remain within the 60 ft for the spell to maintain - it would say so. Spells like Witch Bolt for example do that. So no - once the spell has been cast successfully - as long as the Wizard can maintain concentration - they can go wherever they please.
Generally, spell descriptions tell you what causes the spell to end. With that idea firmly in mind, hold person lasts for the duration unless the creature makes its save at the end of one of its turn, no matter the distance the caster is from the creature.
