So I'm about to start Sunless Citadel as a Blood Hunter, and for RP/backstory purposes the very first Blood Curse I chose was "Blood Curse of Exposure". The only thing I feel I would need clarification on is the time in which the you activate the Blood Curse.
When a creature you can see within 30 feet is hit by an attack or spell, you can use your reaction to temporarily weaken their resilience against it. Until the end of the turn, the target loses resistance to the damage types of the triggering attack or spell.
I'm wondering, do you activate the Blood Curse after the target is hit, but before damage is applied (allowing the full damage to be dealt on the initial blow), or would you activate it after the entire attack/spell attack action is resolved, damage and all?
The Blood Curse of Exposure is activated before the target is hit and lasts until the end of the current turn. You use your reaction to remove the enemy's resistance to the damage types of the triggering attack, which allows that attack to deal the full brunt of its damage. It essentially functions as a limited time debuff.
I apologize if I'm necroposting here, but I wanted to clarify.
The Blood curse is not activated "before the target is hit." It's right there in the wording: "When a creature... is hit." Hit->Blood Curse->Damage. So, you trigger the blood curse before you know what the damage roll is.
But also, it's not similar language to Absorb Elements. Absorb Elements triggers "when you take... damage", which is after a hit. Hit->Damage->Absorb Elements->Damage taken is halved.
The Blood Curse shows up in time for you to do damage bypassing resistance (or immunity when enhanced), but NOT in time for you to know what your damage roll is going to be and whether using it is "worth it." You confirm a hit, and have to decide right then before you roll damage, do I want to neutralize the resistance?
My big question is about the amplification of the curse. When it’s amplified, it states the target loses invulnerability, having resistance. Does that mean by invoking and amplifying it on an ally would grant the ally resistance?

No it would turn an invulnerability into an resistance, it would not grant resistance to someone not having it.
Meaning it would downgrade immunity to resistance?
No. I apologize for Thezzaruzz, but they’re wrong. The effect does what is says it does: Nullifying a creature’s resistance to the damage of an attack, not weakening them in a way such as turning an immunity to a resistance.

They are talking about Amplifying - which does turn immunity into resistance.
Amplify. The target instead loses invulnerability to the damage types of the triggering attack or spell, having resistance to them until the end of the turn.
It's clear the intention is that the target only gets resistance if they had immunity before.

Thank you for the clarification. What confused me was the wording of Invulnerability vs. Immunity
Is there a good way to see if a creature has resistances? Its not like there is a healthbar or revealed stats includedm which tell me when I should activate this.

Absorb elements has similar wording and is supposed to work against the trigger so... maybe?

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.

That's understandable. It's probably best to remember that the Blood Hunter is homebrew - so it's not going to be worded like official content.
