The way I interpret war caster is that it uses the OA trigger, but replaces the OA with "use your reaction to cast a spell at the creature." Echo knight lets you OA from the echo's position, but an OA did not occur.
In conclusion, fire bolt instead (because you can still cast a spell at the target from your position, the trigger still occurred).

When a creature that you can see within 5 feet of your echo moves at least 5 feet away from it, you can use your reaction to make an opportunity attack against that creature as if you were in the echo’s space.
Based on this actual text from the Echo abilities, how did you arrive at the conclusion that an OA did not occur?

Based on the actual text from war caster: "you can use your reaction to cast a spell at the creature, rather than making an opportunity attack."

Unfortunately, the first part of the sentence from which you are the second part, says "When a hostile creature's movement provokes an opportunity attack from you...".
So, from that point of view, if something moving provokes an opportunity attack from the echo, then the same bonus should apply.
The Echo Knight feature only lets you make an attack of opportunity from the echo’s space. War Caster lets you do something instead of making an attack of opportunity; that something (cast a spell) is not something the Echo Knight feature allows. It’s not complicated.
If a creature provokes an attack of opportunity from you and you want to respond from your echo’s space, your response must be an attack of opportunity, because that’s all the echo knight feature allows. There is absolutely no reason “the same bonus should apply,” because the “bonus” explicitly only applies to attacks of opportunity, which, again, the spell allowed by War Caster explicitly is not.
As DxJxC mentioned, you can always just do a ranged cantrip.
I agree with Gilgamesh, that since both features use “opportunity attack,” you should be able to Warcaster from the Echo.
War Caster explicitly does not use an “opportunity attack.” Pretending “rather than” isn’t there after DxJxC made a point of emphasizing it is highly disingenuous.
An “opportunity attack” is the resource that fuels a Warcaster cantrip. Echo Knight provides an “opportunity attack.” What’s the problem?
Wait... I’m reading more closely now, I see what I’ve done wrong. The echo provoked an OA -> you can cast a cantrip... but nothing is allowing you to cast that cantrip from the echo. So no BB/GFB from the Echo.
I see now, I misunderstood... yeah, you and Dx are right, then.
Say I have a multiclass echoknight/bladesinger and I take the war caster feat.
can the AOO from the Echo position be a booming blade spell?
Hmm... I would say No.

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.

The most fun parts of being an Echo Knight are the parts that don't hold up to scrutiny.
