It’s early in the morning, and the Half Orc Dench had just begun cleaning the counter and setting out the chairs for the day. Despite his appearance he was a jovial creature and took great pride in his tavern, The Laughing Pegasus. He is humming a tune, as this is one of his favorite tasks before the crowds come, where it’s quiet and it’s early enough that there’s light but the sun isn’t blazing. Even though there’s human blood in him he tries to steer clear of the sun. He’s just about done with the last chair when the door slams open and in walks one of his favorite patrons, Erevan Galonodel. Erevan stumbles towards the bar takes a seat and lets out a weird groan/chuckle hybrid. “It’s a little early for a drink, even for you. “ chuckles Dench, as he is already pouring Erevan a drink. “Is it early?” Erevan asks as he reaches for the tumbler, “Could’ve sworn it was late. “ He quickly downs the drink, and slides it back for a refill. Dench chuckles again “You’re not usually this tired when you’re done with a quest. “ Erevan chuckles in response, “I think it’s this whole mentorship arrangement with Larissa. It’s adding more to the journey. And this journey in itself was something different. “ Erevan proceeds to tell him about the adventure to the Wizards Tower...
“It was in here where it started. I was enjoying a drink of your special Meade when in bursts Larissa. She rushes over to me and starts telling me about this marsh on the outskirts of town. There have been rumors that underneath of it is an old Wizards Tower and how she needs to go see it. Before I can answer her she takes off to what I assume is out of town. I sigh to myself get up and go after her. No way was I going to let her go off on her own, she’s never been outside the city. I catch up to her and she’s talking to a human and a dwarf, both (admittedly) stout warriors, whom I already know. Ayaan, the human musician whom I loathe, and Travek a dwarf I’ve known since I was younger and still lived in Neverwinter. He grew up in Gauntlegrym, the dwarf realm underneath the forest. We were never close but we know each other well enough. It seems as if Larissa has enlisted them as well. Seeing as this is inevitable intake point, being the most experienced, and lead the way to the marsh “This should be fun” I mutter to myself.
It’s been hours and this marsh and supposed tower are nowhere in sight and our little troop is getting antsy. We’re about to turn back when I notice something off to the side on a smaller path. I quickly go over to it, kneel down and inspect this indention on the ground. As I look closer I see that they’re a set of dwarf tracks. “These look familiar” I whisper to myself. I stand back up, and turn to the party “This way” and start the trek down this path. “I hope he knows what he’s doing.” I hear Ayaan mutter to Travek in dwarvish. “I think I do” I reply, also in dwarvish.
It’s been about an hour and the sun has set, I’m starting tho think that I didn’t know what I was doing and then I hear Larissa whisper “Look!” And she’s pointing ahead and I now see several torches in the distance. I immediately shake off any weariness that might’ve been creeping up on me and motion for everyone to remain quiet. We creep up close enough to see a camp with pretty tall structures and that there are three massive beings inhabiting it. We also notice that we have finally reached the marsh, at least we hope it’s the marsh we we are looking for. As we draw closer to the camp I can feel the rest of the team tense up and prepare for a fight, as we see the largest, what is now visible, half-ogre come stomping towards us. A smirk crosses my face.
Travek and I race towards it, he brandishing his battle axe in one hand and a shield in another. I throw a dagger and I watch it sink into his armor. I pull out my short swords and in a circling motion quickly strike him twice. We’ve definitely got his attention. It pulls out a club of sorts and takes a swipe at me but I swiftly dodge it. I look over and I see Ayaan has pulled out his glaive and has taken a stance right behind Travek. You can tell they’ve fought together before. Together we three battle this monster and at one point I thought Travek was a goner as the half-ogre let’s loose a massive swing at my dwarf friend but Travek plants himself and raising his shield bats the club away. Letting loose a ferocious battle cry Travek attacks with reinvigorated fury. It’s in this brief moment where I remember Larissa, and I hear noises of battle over in the ogres camp. Travek and Ayaan make quick work of the beast, weakened by now. “Where’s Larissa?“ I ask them once we’re sure of the beasts death. Before they have a chance to answer we see another half-ogre attempt to flee, running out of the camp I take a few quick steps and let loose a dagger. I watch it fly 30 feet before killing the beast. Now that it’s dead I see a spear and one Ranger’s arrow embedded in its hide.
I retrieve my daggers and quickly make my way to camp where I see the third half-ogre in a blaze. I look up and I see Larissa making her way talking towards me talking to a figure in Ranger garb. Someone I haven’t seen in a long time. I smile widely “Is that Rolen?” I exclaim. The half-elf looks at me curiously then recognizing me yells back, “Cousin! It’s been too long.” We embrace. I then hear something yell from what appears to be a bonfire “Looks like we’re eating well tonight!” I see a small shadow by the fire take a massive leap and land in front of me. A Halfling in Ranger clothing is looking up at me. “Say. You’re Erevan ain’t ya?” He asks me in a surprisingly gruff voice for a Halfling. “That I am, friend and who might you be. “ “I’m Josire, Rolens partner. “ By this time it’s well after midnight and we all having to new compatriots sit around the fire and become acquainted, telling of how we got here. The Rangers tell us of how they had heard of the tower similarly to us and how they and their other adventuring companions, who were in their own camp, were here to investigate the reports. From there we all settled down, being obviously exhausted, and make camp for the night. “
“Is that it?” Dench asks, mockingly, “Please. Come back when you have a real story hehe. “ Erevan finishing his umpteenth drink holds up a finger. “That was to set up the story my friend. The real adventure begins the next morning, when we enter the Wizards Tower. The tower that takes on an adventure of knowledge, of gods, and of the undead. “ The rogues slides the bartender his glass. “Refill please.”
Part 2: “Is that so?” Dench asks loftily. “That it is” Erevan says reaching out for another refill “eh eh. “ Dench says in response. “Even for you, you’ve had enough for a while.” Meeting the tipsy Rogues glare, he goes on saying, “ You get more when you finish this tale of yours. “ Erevan deciding to be agreeable, continues the tale he started, “Fair enough. It was the morning when we all finally woke up. The sun was risen. And now that there was daylight we saw the entrance to the tower....”
“The entrance was no ordinary entrance as it was no ordinary tower. Apparently this tower had been around for some while because this was no entrance that you wold see at the bottom of a tower, it was one you would see at the top of a tower. At this moment we see Justice, a former employee of mine who works at the library back in Waterdeep, walks up to us. Apparently he was part of Rolen and Josire’s original party. On this tower we find a Gargoyle statue, and upon inspection has a movable arm, almost like a lever of some sort. “I have a bad feeling about this” I mutter to myself, and look back at our troupe of sorts. “Get ready!” I shout, not knowing what’s about to happen. I pull the arm. Expecting something to happen we were surprised when all that happened was an opening reveal itself. An indent on one side with a space for a small object has appeared about 40 feet away from where we we were standing. “I have an idea” barks Josire. He walks over to the indent takes what looks like a jewel and places it in the space. All of a sudden we hear a loud shifting and moving of stone. We go back over to the tower and see the entrance has opened! I take point and lead us down the dark stairs. As we make our way down the flight of steps we come upon a wall that has four strange symbols on it. I recognize a couple from my studies back in Neverwinter, but can’t remember any details. There’s also a riddle on the wall. We figure out that it’s a message telling us how to open the door. Once we slide the symbols to each of their slots we hear “KA-THUNK!” And a door reveals itself. As we enter we see a room with an arch way entering to other rooms to the right and left of us. At the end of this room we see a statue that looks almost like an altar, with a flame floating above it. We all take a look at it and come to a conclusion of some sort or other I don’t really remember. I look to my left and I see an open doorway into another room. Seeing as there’s nothing really happening in the room we were currently in, i nudged Rolan and motioned to the door. Looking at me, then the door, than back at me he smiled and nodded. We slip away and enter the new room and all we see is another statue. We realize that this statue is of a god whose symbol we saw a few minutes ago as we entered the tower. In his hands he holds an item of some sort. At the same time we try to remove it but immediately get shocked! Upon further inspection we see that it is booby trapped, obviously. I grin as I see that I have a chance to use my thieves tools. “Give me a sec. “ I say to my old mentee. I get to work and am unsuccessful on my first attempt, “ hmph. “ I grunt, “guess I’m a little rusty”. On the second attempt I successfully disengage it. As I get up I see that Larissa and Josire have joined us. Continuing onward we pass through two other rooms. The first was pretty forgettable for me other than the Halfling triggering a booby trap that caused me to go blind temporarily! Luckily I had some holy water and fixed it right up. In the next room there was this book that we apparently had to write a secret in or something. I did that quickly and then I saw another door.Every now and then we hear a rumble and yelling from the other side of the walls, sounding like Ayaan and Travek. I went over to it, saw it was locked tried to pick it, and was met with spikes in my hand! I tell you my friend this was not my day. I quickly open the door and I see a room full of Gargoyles. But the strangest thing was that there was a giant one in the center. Alive. And looking straight at me. “Guys!” I yell behind me. I turn back around and see the gargoyle trying to talk. After going through a couple different languages he arrives at Elvish. “Who are you and what is your business here.” Not wanting to get on over our heads I quickly tell him we are explorers coming here on a rumor. Seeming satisfied with this he lets us go. I go over to the other side of the room see another door, first pick the booby trap, then pick the door and walk out to find Travek, Justice, and a soaked to the bone Ayaan. “Hey guys.” No sooner have I said this than I hear Rolen yell, “Hey I found another set of stairs!” I quickly go back and see that Brottor (a dwarven cleric, minor celebrity, and adventuring friend) has arrived, he tells me that he was with the other party. We all group together and enter the lowest level of the Wizards Tower. As we step out into the foyer of this new hall, we turn the corner and we see a bright, blazing wall of fire.. “
The sun is now starting it’s evening descent and there’s a crowd around the mysterious rogue. Erevan is halfway through telling the part of the final floor “... now Ayaan has all of us singing and being idiots. We get through the final wall and enter a workspace of sorts, almost a workshop. We grab a few things then enter a room filled with scrolls and books! It seems like hundreds of them! And standing at a desk is this horrible White. This guy looks as if he was fresh out of the grave. I look at Rolen and say-“ At this moment a blue folded object zooms through doors of the Laughing Pegasus and smacks Erevan in the face. He grunts, looks perturbed then looks at it, now in his hand. It looks like an origami of some sort. He has a cautious look on his face as he unfolds it, reads it slowly, reads it again and then looks up. No sooner does he look up then it flies from his hand into the fireplace. “Um I gotta go. “ he slaps down a couple gold pieces for his food and starts to walk out. “ Wait!” Dench bellows, “what about that nasty lookin White??”. “Umm” Erevan says clearly having changed gears” He dies, we get some treasure and we left. The end.” The crowd is now booing and telling him to stay, but without even looking back our hero tosses his cloak on over his shoulders, flips up his hood and walks out into his next adventure.
Epilogue: (Two weeks have passed since Erevan received that mysterious flying note. He now returns from his journey*.)
The sun blazes bright on the city of Waterdeep as Erevan walks through the east gate with his compatriots: Larissa, Rolen and Travek. While they seem unharmed physically, their faces appear as if a great burden has been placed on them. They all say their goodbyes and go to their homes. After he had completed his trance, Erevan decided to go to where our adventure began, The Laughing Pegasus. As he’s walking up he sees a gorilla sitting outside the door. Raising an eyebrow in question he keeps walking and steps into the tavern. As soon as he steps inside he sees a familiar face. “Hey! Erevan! I’ve been looking everywhere for you!” The gruff voice speaking is Josire. He obviously has something to say but before he can say anything in walks Larissa, Travek, and Justice. They all grab a table together and begin telling those who had not been about their recent adventures. During this Erevan notices something.... different, about Justice. “His horns seem bigger. Could it be that book?” Erevan thinks to himself. “I never thought that he might read it.” An hour or two pass by, when all of a sudden, the sun goes out. Yells and screaming begin to pick up outside the tavern. “That can’t be good” mutters Erevan. They all exchange glances, get up and race outside. What they see they can’t believe. Above Waterdeep, a city seemingly made of clouds floats above the city. “Cloud giants!” Exclaims Josire. Before our heroes even have a chance to think a bright bolt of energy explodes from the direction of The Keep! It races to the sky, straight towards the giant city! And about a hundred feet before it gets there it explodes again! And our heroes watch as a blue dome of pure energy engulfs the entire city of Waterdeep. SMACK! Erevan didn’t see the blue note streak towards him. Once he shakes off the surprise he sees that its almost the exact same note sent to him not two weeks ago. They all look to him as he quickly reads it. He then reads it out loud:
“Thanks for the delivery! You got it here just in time. Hopefully this will do the job. Sorry I couldn’t thank you in person. -A. “ “Do you think he’s talking about...?” Larissa asks Erevan. A rare look of surprise is on his face. “I think so. “ he states. “Who? What?” Justice asks frustrated. He’s now on top of the gorilla, named Ricemin, we first saw outside the tavern. Erevan in reply says “ The Captain of Waterdeep. “ In awed silence they all look to the beam of light...
