I love this character. I want to make him better. Need advice.
My name is Belhorn Everwood. I grew up northwest of Hill’s Edge, of the Western Heartlands. As I grew up, I never had many friends. I was treated as an outcast. I was raised by my mother. My father, Meldarion Everwood, kinsman of the Vyshaan the rulers of the sun elf clan, fell during the 5 Crown War. The Vyshaan were defeated and the kingdom of Aryvandaar dissolved.
The city of Hill’s edge was a battle ground once in the 5 Crown War. It had devastated the town destroying its temple to Lliira, Cry of Joy and other local businesses. It was then that my Father met my Mother, Jillian Caseldown. My mother tells me she only met him once prior to his death. The inhabitants of Hill’s Edge were overwhelmed having to rebuild the town. The townsman swore that never will an elf be welcome in Hill’s Edge again.
I was kept a secret from the town of Hill’s Edge in the Western Heartlands region. never leaving my home as a child. I am a half elf, you see, living in a world of humans who did not take kindly to a being of my ancestry. I take after my father mostly, he was an elf. The last Crown War. I constantly tried to hide my ears from the public whenever I could leave my home, but things were soon to change.
I wondered into town hood drawn from my black cloak as I had just a few times before. I was just passing through the town square because a storm was beginning in the north. A gust of wind came through and took my hood clear off. I was spotted by just one woman and she screamed, “AHHHH!!! AN ELF!!” All eyes were now on me, eyes of fear and hatred. Immediately, I ran to the only place I felt safe, my home. Now I realized that was a naïve decision. My mother stormed outside defending me as her son for the first time in 20 years. The elders were out raged but went back to town.
Later that night night, my home was attacked and burned to the ground, by enraged humans who had threatened our family to leave town due to my mother’s abomination of a son. ultimately killing my her.
Quickly, I fled town living in solitude mourning over the death of my mother. After months of stealing and living as an urchin. I had enough, I wanted revenge for my mother. As I scrounged through an old library in what appeared as an abandoned town, I came across a very interesting book of what seemed to contain a ritual. As I followed the instructions, I summoned the voice that spoke to me through psychic powers, an old powerful being. He called himself Tharizdun the Chained God. I begged for him to help me destroy anyone who wishes harm to me and people I hold dear and I will be eternally grateful. The Chained God, had been watching me for a while, he told me and could use me for his bidding. He told me, “You shall be my servant, and I shall be your guide.” I said, “yes milord, anything you desire.” I closed my eyes and knelt. The Chained God told me to stand and look upon him. As I rose and opened my eyes, the power filled my veins like a sickness and I looked upon him and saw…. nothing…. darkness.
It has a great level of detail at the start, which is always great to work with as a DM. I would make sure your DM knows enough official lore to get the significance of the Crown Wars, and that such an event occurred in their world (some create completely unique realms). Also, as the pact is the significant feature if the warlock class, let at least your DM know how specific your deal was. Did your character fully know what they were signing up for?How often does your patron demand a specific service/fee for your gifts? What would be a typical request? Are they ever present in your thoughts, or are they distant to an eerie degree?
Maybe think about what your hopes/dreams/fears were before you made the pact, and how this event may have changed your outlook. My warlock character was forbidden to study magic because of a “family curse” barely explained to him, so he did everything he could to try and get his hands in magic books, etc. When he came across what appeared to be a book of family history and reawakened a pact his grandfather had made with a Great Old One, he leapt at the chance to acquire new power. He doesn’t have any idea what he’s got himself into, how far it goes, etc. Since all he had wanted growing up was to be a wizard, he now eagerly tests his abilities at every chance with little heed to the consequences. I’m pretty excited that he has just got access to Summon Greater Demon, and all the bad decisions that may result...
