So, l had a idea for a pirate drow, but as l make all my characters at level 1 (easier to add stuff then remove them imo) l had the idea of a pirate captain somehow getting cursed or something, and being turned into a drow. (that way, their adventuring hook is "find a way back to normal, or at the very least, stop the sun from hurting their eyes all the time.)
What l want to know, is: is there any lore or magic items or something that could do this (other then true polymorph/wish) or would this have to rely on homebrew/dm handwaving?
It's canon that Lolth is able to turn an elf into a drow, so if you start with an elf pirate, that's an option.
Say, he was kind of adventurous sort and stole something from the Lost Temple of Teohtihuacan, The Spider Queen and is now cursed until he can achieve so and so.

Cursed treasure, l like it. Any ideas for what it should/could be?
I mean the thing can be anything from a jade spider to some Pirates of the Caribbean doo-dad. What I’m mostly interested in is the conditions placed on removal of the curse. If this is your backstory it’s probably something that should be resolvable before you hit level 20. But Lolth’s webs are as subtle as any mere Devil’s contracts, and “gather up all the pieces and put it back’ seems honestly a little forgiving for her.
much like how lolth is able to turn an elf into a drow, eilistraee is able to switch genders from male to female and female to male through a ritual. there may be a god that can change race in a similar way (and if not you could ask the dm to make one)
This would be a possible side effect of a Reincarnate spell. but that's powerful for a level one character.
It's by far the lowest level canonical effect that can do it -- the others are True Polymorph (which will end the first time the character is reduced to 0 hp) and undefined major effects of Wish and Divine Intervention. I would tend to go with a homebrew curse.

I'm reminded of [SPOILERS FOR CAMPAIGN 2 OF CRITICAL ROLE]

how they used Reincarnate to turn Sam's character from a halfling into a goblin.
