For those of you that choose to use Matthew Mercer's Bloodhunter class, what kind of lore do you use? How, when, and why were the bloodhunters first founded? Are they commonly accepted or are the rejected by society, are they a secret society? What does the process of becoming a blood hunter look like, and they differ from order to order?
I want to post my own lore here. I have each of the orders swear a blood oath in different ways to gain their abilities and from different sources. So here they are
Lycan- There is much to be feared in the wilds of the frontier, but nothing is as feared as the beasts. Lycanthropes are said to prowl the night, and the settlers of the frontier fear the native Druids and their connection to the beasts. So they employ hunters to track down and slaughter such beasts. Little do they know that within their halls, the hunters drain captured lycans of their blood, and use it as part of their Taming ritual, to create a new beast hunter.
Mutant- There are always those who wish to push discovery to its limits, but some can take it too far. The Order of the Mutant, consider themselves to researchers into the limits of human capabilities, by pushing themselves to be beyond human. Often, bloodhunters are created from experiments, sometimes against their will. But so long as there are criminals no one would miss, there are always new lab rats.
Profane Soul (Undying)- In times of old, the vampire twins Vlad and Carmilla Alucard slaughtered humanity for food and sport. But, Vlad found himself falling in with a human woman, Maria, whom was caring and beautiful. In an act of cruelty, Carmilla killed Maria, and Vlad swore to avenge Maria, and to make right what he had done wrong so many times. He shared some of his blood with warriors and hunters willing to slaughter the undead, in particular, vampires.
Profane Soul (Fiend)- Fiends are known for infighting amongst themselves quite often. Their nature leads them to struggle for power amongst their own kind, and use any means to seize it. From such a deal were the first fiend hunters born. A blood contract is formed between a fiend and human, so that a human may gain the power to hunt fiends and fiends might gain power from its brethren being hunted.
Power drawn from accursed weapons often comes at a price. For hexblade bloodhunters, that price is their own blood. The order itself is structured in a hierarchy, with the head of order wielding the hexblade to which all other hunters of the order swear to. New hunters kneel before the head of the order and cut their hands on the blade, letting it drink of their blood, so that they may draw from its power.
