We've started a campaign set in the Forgotten Realms. The first adventure took place in the Dessarin Valley. I asked my players to come up with backstories this week and I’m trying to help out with the setting. Most of my experience is reading a couple of R.A. Salvatore novels, and playing video and boardgames, and of course playing a few RPG adventures in the world of Faerûn. I’m familiar with some geography and basic political structures, but I am no expert on the setting.
Is there such a thing as a barbarian dwarf tribe? Dwarfs seem so ... civilized. I’m having trouble imagining where a barbarian dwarf would come from in the world of Faerûn. Any ideas?

"The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel." – William Gibson, Neuromancer
A couple of routes might be a dwarf whose family was made clanless (their family line was outcast for some poor judgement either generations ago or recently) which took up living with a barbarian tribe, a dwarf who was disowned from their family, or one that never had a very notable family and left to become great outside of the clan structure. Many Uthgardt (Barbarian) tribes roam the Spine of the World, which is also not far from many Dwarven kingdoms.
