Hey everyone, I am making a mini adventure (3-4 sessions) in which Yuan-Ti play the main role, and if possible, i want to stay true to the lore so that is why i hope you guys can help me with that.
Without going into to much detial of the surrounding story, this is the gist of it: A female Pureblood (captain of a ship that brings the group to the island with promisse of a treasure) lures people to a cave as food for a ritual for her Abomination son, so that he can become an Anathema to overthrow an Anathema that rules the island from a hidden temple that has eaten his father right after the breeding proces.
So the questions: - Can Yuan-Ti purebloods get attached to their mating partner aswell as their offspring? - Do Yuan-Ti hold grudges and are vengefull towards their own? - Is it plausable that an Anathema eats other Yuan-Ti to eliminate possible competition? In this case, the eating of the father was to send a message to the mother (which is actually the mother of the Anathema in question) as he didn't want his mother to reproduce any further and caught word of them mating, which led to the Anathema ordering a raid on the hatchery of them, destroying all eggs (but one egg survived, which came out as the Abomenation of this story)
Is this far fetched? or plausable?
As for the adventure, the party ends up fighting the Abomenation in the first session after which the mother intervenes as the party is about to deal the killing blow and lets the party know some of this history. Just as additional fodder for the party to eventually take on the ruling Anathema, and offer a choice of sparing the Abomenation if they feel like it (what would you do? :D )
Any other information you might have about the Yuan-Ti lore and their social/relationshipp skills, please let me know. Cheers! -
Well the following is from the discontinued Volo's which is mostly Forgotten Realms based.
Can Yuan-Ti purebloods get attached to their mating partner aswell as their offspring? They would not as written be attached to either their mate or their offspring in terms of love. In fact, since the eggs are laid in cluches and stored in a common hatchery the parents may not be aware which child is their progeny. However, there is also a statement in the same paragraph that says live births aren't uncommon.
However, while they might get not attached, but instead become invested in a particular offspring, ensuring their success so they advance in status in a rigid caste system. Yuan-Ti are very practical.
Do Yuan-Ti hold grudges and are vengeful towards their own? It would appear that way to outsiders, but it probably manifests less of a grudge, and more of managing threats. Instead of Vengence, it is more practical to remove a rival from their position. Hate is a foreign concept to them, but that doesn't prevent them from eliminating dangerous rivals.
Is it plausible that an Anathema eats other Yuan-Ti to eliminate possible competition? They certainly eat humans, and certainly may eat/sacrifice other yuan-ti to perform the rituals of transformation to higher forms. But once you are at the top, the need to do so is less. The Yuan-Ti's caste system is such that lesser castes are worth far less than greater ones. But they don't needlessly waste lives either. How Yuan-Ti handle internal polltics isn't covered. So it does sound plausible for it to happen, but I would see it as infrequent. The Yuan-Ti don't want to weaken themselves with internecine conflicts.
From a story/narrative it would work; just keep emotions out of it. That timing of preventing the killing blow might be iffy. On the other hand, they certainly would surrender to bide their time. But ultimately the players (unless on one is a Yuan-Ti) are pawns, to be used and disposed of.
The angle you mentioned of their succes and advancing in their caste system is something i can use for sure. The abomenation being live born is something i can also use for this. Turning the emotions into something practical.
At the end of the day, my party might not uncover all the details of this, but i'd like to have it in place in-case they do, it might enrich the experience for them and gives me a solid basis.
Cheers!

Thank you for that information!
