Once upon a time, I had heard from a fellow player about tale of a mis-made wish from a book he had.
In it, a man bought a ring of three wishes, which had only two wishes left on it but he paid full price, and spent a month thinking out what he'd wish for. The guy wanted to be immortal, to live in a lavish mansion, and his family never to know fear.
What he got was turning into an ogre with a +4 mace (not necessarily immortal, but much harder to kill) on an asteroid orbiting close to the sun all alone. As for his family, they became members of an assassin's guild. Now they don't feel fear, but instead cause it.
This would had been from 2e D&D or earlier. If anyone knows where the story is from please let me know--I've been wracking my brain trying to find it.
Looks like you want an entry in Realmspace, by Dale "slade" Henson. Here's a wiki that mentions the story, citation included. I haven't been able to find a PDF of the source text, but the ISBN is there and the book exists for purchase on Amazon.
