I was reading through Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes earlier today, when a bit of lore caught my eye. A paragraph detailing the lore of the githyanki homeworld of Tu'Narath stated:
"Rumors persist of an enormous dungeon that lies beyond the caves [located at the bottom of the city], a hidden fortress occupied by a mighty demigod who claimed The One in the Void as its home before the githyanki occupied it. Coteries of Red Wizards from the land of Thay on Faeriin, accompanied by githyanki knights, have ventured into this area in recent years. Supposedly, the Thayans once emerged with a huge adamantine container that rumbled and shook, as if to the beat of a monstrous heart."
Lore tidbits like this are very interesting to me, as they are most of the time references to previous modules or adventures. Do any of you know what this is referencing? Who was the demigod? What was in the container? Sounds like good fodder for a campaign.
I would suggest that any cooperation between Thayans and Githyanki is undoubtedly to solve a problem in a mutually agreeable fashion. In the Astral plane, islands are in fact the corpses of dead gods; though in context, that actually means Gods which have partially or wholly severed their connection from their physical manifestation, (body). It's effectively a petrified husk, and their minds are only loosely tethered to it, while that intellect wanders the multiverse in madness or grief.
So, it's very unlikely to be the beating heart of a dead diety. However, it's quite possible, possibly even likely that the Githyanki wanted that demigod removed, but could not themselves achieve such a goal due to some limitation of their powers and abilities, while the Thayans, being Thayans, saw the potential there for power in having control over such a being. Thus, it's very likely they came to a mutual agreement that rid the Githyanki of that ever present nuisance, and provided the Thayans with what they wanted.
What it was they carried out? Most likely the Demigod itself, imprisoned within the Adamantine box by the Thayans fell magic with the aid of the Githyanki Knights. Neither could achieve it on their own, but together they succeeded. And very likely, parted ways after the conditions of the agreement were met.
Which Demigod? That I actually don't recall, though I think I remember reading about it somewhere in the Githyanki lore from Planescape in 2e. Not that I recall, anything particularly nice, but a demigod which was exiled or something of the sort. A Monk perhaps? Which would explain the pounding from inside the box, as it battered against the insides looking for weaknesses.

Sorry, I'm personally unaware of any such information, and I couldn't find anything on any of my usual wikis or searches.
It may also be a seed for future campaigns and published adventures.
This sort of stuff is left to be ripe for the plundering by a creative DM.
The heart could be literally the heart of the dead deity or could be a description of a powerful artefact.
