Hello, I'm writing a book, and I am aware of all of the terrible representation and portrayal of autistic characters. I plan to write a character on the spectrum by request of my friend (who is indeed autistic) and I would like if some asd dnders helped me. If you have a thing that you hate in media with autistic characters, or a suggestion, help me out.

I'm fry, and I make doodles. That's why they call me FRY DOODLES. Also no pressure but check out my YouTube channel (Fry Doodles) I'm a disabled, neurodivergent, artsy dumpster fire who's always open to chat. I'm a sensitive little sad bean, and somewhat of a clown. But, I'm also god's favorite princess and the most interesting girl in the world. Crafter of Constellations, vocaloid enjoyer, waluigi’s #1 fan, space alien, princess-of-quite-a-lot, and certified silly goose
Here's a suggestion, don't make it seem like something bad or something to overcome, but also don't make it just some quirk that makes them different, it's an obstacle, but I'd personally never get rid of my ASD even if I could. Hope this helps! :D

Ok. So, adress it but don't make it their entire personality?

If you want a good example from an actual play (rather than a poor one), there's an NPC in Dimension 20 Fantasy High named Ayda Aguefort who is extremely well done

As an autistic person, we generally don’t like people to use euphemisms for out neurodivergence. “Autistic” is not a dirty word.
Also, a word usage tips: Surveys suggest over 90% of us autistic people prefer identity-first language (autistic person/is autistic) over person-first (person with autism/has autism).

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

I may have overestimated it, the numbers fluctuate depending on the survey. Some surveys have IFL preferred at >75%, and a small minority of studies show a PFL preference.
Cool, thanks for sharing. The thing about surveys, especially when it comes to things like neurodivergent identity, is that who's doing the survey can have a significant impact on the outcome of the survey.

I have sensory issues, and while I'm not autistic, my suggestion for the sensory issues is to show how it slowly pushes them over the edge if they aren't comfortable. For me, when it's too loud, I cover my ears because of the pain, or I avoid foods that I don't like due to texture issues or find a way around it (ex. chicken nuggets v. unbreaded chicken).
[Edit]From my own experiences: A simple descriptive scene, easy to build on. Describes the character experiencing sensory overload in a way that doesn't sound like an explanation.
... As more people entered the bar, the voices of the boisterous crowd morphed into one unending, unintelligible shout. Grabbing their drink, Terry dashed to the outdoor terrace. . . .

Yes, there are pros and cons to every neurodivergence, e.g., ASD, ADHD, etc. In many ways, people like this have special abilities.
Started playing AD&D in the late 70s and stopped in the mid-80s. Started immersing myself into 5e in 2023

Here’s a very recent one, from the Journal of Critical Study of Communication and Disability.
