I'm fleshing out a backstory for a character to play Curse of Strahd. Our characters will be beginning in Faerun. She will be a Protector Assimar born to a noble, human, family in Mulhorand (where I read a lot of Aasimar are born.).Her family has kept track of their lineage and knows that her grandmother, on her mother's side, somehow ended up mating with the Solar Angel Caelum the Sun Emperor (forgive me, haven't worked out the 'why of that yet) giving her her celestial heritage. I don't like any of the gods in the Mulhorandi Pantheon and want her to be a Paladin, so her choice of God is somewhat important. (The god her angel ancestor served is Pelor, who is more appropriate for druids and rangers, so can't have had her family pass him on to her.. also, no place to worship Pelor in Mulhorand.) I like Lanthandar for a god of an Aasimar paladin and want to give her the 'Far Traveler' Background (perception and insight+) so thought I'd have her go on a pilgrimage from Mulhorand to Waterdeep, as a result of a vision from Lathandar, ( I know, so original, a 'vision'), to the Order of the Aster, where she gets her Paladin training.
All I know is Mulhorand is in Easton Faerun and Waterdeep is in The North, on the Sword Coast. Can't find a map big enough to show both places at once and just want to make sure it isn't an insanely, impossibly distant trip for her to make.. Can anyone provide some info on that? All help is appreciated!
Here is the backstory so far, as long as her travel is plausible... (name is temporary)
"In the ancient land of Mulhorand, where the sands whisper secrets of forgotten gods and the sun blazes with divine fire, Seraphina Silverblade came into the world. Born to noble human parents, her lineage was steeped in both earthly nobility and celestial grace. Her mother, Lady Isolde, was a gentle soul with a heart attuned to the heavens, while her father, Lord Cedric, wielded a sword with the precision of a seasoned warrior.
From her earliest days, Seraphina exhibited an otherworldly beauty—a porcelain complexion, glowing white eyes, and pearl colored hair that shimmered like moonlight on water. But it was her snowy wings that set her apart. Feathery and iridescent, they sprouted from her shoulder blades, their tips brushing the ground when she stood tall. These wings marked her as a Protector Aasimar, a celestial being destined for greatness.
As a child, Seraphina reveled in tales of gods and heroes. She listened with rapt attention as the temple priests recounted the deeds of Lathander, the Morninglord, whose radiant light heralded each dawn. The sun became her silent companion, and she would often climb to the highest tower of her family’s estate, stretching her wings toward the sky as if yearning to touch the divine.
One fateful night, as the stars aligned in a celestial dance, Seraphina received a vision. The air shimmered, and before her stood a luminous figure—an avatar of Lathander himself. His voice echoed through her mind, filling her with purpose and resolve. He spoke of a sacred duty, a path that would lead her beyond the borders of Mulhorand, to a city where shadows danced and secrets whispered—the great port city of Waterdeep.
Guided by her celestial heritage and fueled by her newfound purpose, Seraphina embarked on a long pilgrimage. She left behind her childhood home, her parents’ tearful blessings echoing in her ears. Her journey took her across treacherous deserts, through bustling marketplaces, and into the heart of Waterdeep. There, she sought out the Order of the Aster, a revered order of knights dedicated to safeguarding the realms against extraplanar threats.
The Order welcomed her with open arms, recognizing the divine spark within her. Under the tutelage of seasoned paladins, Seraphina honed her combat skills, her swordplay infused with the grace of her celestial bloodline. She learned to channel her inner light, healing wounds and banishing darkness wherever it dared to creep.
Within the Order, Seraphina forged bonds. Among her companions, she found a kindred spirit—a powerful knight named Sir Galen Stormshield. Galen’s armor bore the scars of countless battles, and his unwavering loyalty to the Order inspired her. Together, they sparred, shared stories, and stood side by side against the encroaching darkness.
But it was during her vigil atop the Tower of the Morning—a spire dedicated to Lathander—that she first felt the presence of her other-worldly grandfather, Caelum, the Solar Angel, also known as “The Sun Emperor”. Caelum had once walked among the stars, his love for Seraphina’s maternal grandmother transcending mortal boundaries. Their union had gifted Seraphina her celestial ancestry, and now, as she gazed at the sun-kissed horizon, she felt a connection to him—a legacy of courage and compassion.
Seraphina’s silver blade gleamed in the dawn’s first light, and she vowed to uphold her lineage. She would be a beacon of hope, a defender of the innocent, and a sworn enemy of darkness. Her celestial wings unfurled, catching the wind, and she soared above Waterdeep, her heart ablaze with purpose.
And so, Seraphina Silverblade, the noble-born Aasimar, stood ready to face the challenges that awaited her—a paladin of Lathander, a guardian of the realms, and a living testament to the celestial love that had shaped her destiny."
Any distance is possible, it's just a matter of how long she has or by what means she is getting there. It would take her a while by horse, and if she is on a time limit to reach there, she might use teleportation spells to get her there. You can bridge a map by increasing the inch-per-xmile ratio.
Thanks for the reply. It's good to know it wasn't an unrealistic distance. I can't find a map online where I can see my leaving point and destination at the same time and not familiar with the Forgotten Realm geography.
