I'm developing a campaign based in part on the dragon-giant war and Tiamat's imprisonment in Avernus. According to the Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, she was confined by a curse of "a forgotten giant god," putting an end to the war. I would like to utilize as much of established lore as possible in developing the campaign. For example, I have a memory of having read somewhere sometime that Tiamat killed King Hekaton, king of storm giants. Another example, "The Storm King's Thunder" adventure module, I understand that it names King Hekaton is supposed to have been ambushed and killed as part of a conflict between giants and the giant-dragon war.
I could spend a small fortune, wreck the marriage, and spend months in close study and reading, and still not have a definitive answer because there is nothing definitive in DnD. But, does anyone have any information to impart on the subject of the giant-dragon war, how Tiamat came to be imprisoned in Avernus, or recommendations of source material to help firm up the lore without making it up out of whole cloth -- which I am quite willing and capable of doing, but I'd rather not.
Rather than spend that money try the forgotten realms wiki. Look up things like Tiamat, king Keaton and giant dragon war and read the history for free. All of that is Faerun lore so as much as exists should be up there.
Well, I'll be! You kids gotta Wiki fer everything, dontcha? Why back in the day, if you wanted to know a thang, you had ta buy a flesh and blood book! Nowadays, iffin you wanna know a thang, you just flip your wrist, wave yer wand, and it'll appear on your little glowing screen.
I reckon I'll visit that thar Wiki-thing-a-majig and see what they'll say.
For some additional ideas it might be worthwhile to do some reading on ancient Mesopotamian legends since that is where D&D got Tiamat in the first place. Combining that with D&D lore makes for some interesting plot threads and speculation as to the connection between ancient Earth and places like Unther in the Forgotten Realms. Then there is the new lore from Fizban`s Treasury of Dragons about the "First World" as to how the "Mother of Dragons" was exiled to Avernus/"The Abyss" and seems to have found her way into the mythology of a number of worlds in the D&D multiverse.
By the way, in "Storm King`s Thunder", King Hekaton isn`t dead. He`s just been imprisoned due to the machinations of a blue dragon named Iymrith. She was involved in the death of Hekaton`s wife though.
Howdy y'all!
