Hi yall, this is my first thread and I was hoping to seek opinions. Assuming that you can use the DMG magic item rules and +1 and +2 weapons are available for purchase in major cities for like 4,000 gold...how are such weapons treated socially in various contexts?
Like, is pulling one more of an escalation or no? Is there social ramifications in their use and ownership in various contexts? Assuming a baseline high magic, high fantasy setting, though feel free to ground it in your preferred parameters or specific settings homebrew or official.
This question was brought on because my DM asked me why I didn't use the magic sword he gave me as standard. I been asking around and it seems to bring mostly that there shouldn't be any implications for just a 10% increase in efficiency. Other opinions suggest that a +2 magical weapon might be very important and game changing even with the only 10% increase inefficacy. And if nothing else there are economic considerations for carrying around something worth 10 years of living expenses.
Context is important and a lot of these answers depend on how the DM sees things.
Unless the specific weapon is famed in-universe, I don't think pulling a highly magical weapon would be more of an escalation in a social situation than pulling a mundane one. Both indicate you are willing to harm and kill. Your DM gave you the sword, use it.
As for economics, the D&D economy has issues and unless it's something the DM/players really, really want to explore, I wouldn't worry about it. Sure, your highly magical weapon might be worth a lot more, but how many people will be able to instantly identify a magic weapon on sight, and of those, how many would think "sure, I can definitely take that guy?" That highly magical sword isn't going to be worth 4,000 to an average mugger, they'd need to figure out who would buy it. Maybe that's not so hard if there's a magic shop on every corner, though.
