There's a stream where one of the characters will not be available for the next session or so. (EDIT: Pro car racer. Likely the reason. Isolated holiday is another, though. The move to eSports [yes, for pro drivers, too] has made the schedule all wonky for car racing fans.) What happened? Kidnapped in a cliffhanger that was a long time coming and, still, nobody else saw it coming.😱
In another stream, one of the players went to work freelance and she wouldn't be available. They left him at a pub in the Material Plane, but she can play him again if the opportunity arises since he's not dead.
Rather than death, see if there's some way to work in a story for a temporary exclusion.
Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
I was in a game one time where one of the players had become tired of his character and wanted to try playing a different class. We entered a dungeon and he ran ahead of everyone to "check" for traps (he was a paladin). After setting off a few traps and taking severe damage, he finally killed his character after it ran into an area of reverse gravity and it fell (upward) on a poison-spiked ceiling, and then back down (when the spell was dispelled) to the ground.

Funny, but no.
Death isn't the only solution.
