Born to a father who was a page for the King, a lot was expected of little Benjamin. And he learned everything he could, soaking up lessons on everything from arithmetic to etiquette to swordsmanship. He was a fine young man. Eventually, he became a page himself, granting him full access to the castle of which he now had quarters in. One evening, after all of his work was done, Benjamin found himself wandering down to he basement of the castle, where, in a discreet location he finds a hatch. He opens it and follows the ladder down until his knees are shaking. Turning around, he discovers that he is in a massive cave, and before him but further into the cave sits a massive sundial. "There's not any light down here," he thinks, as he makes his way toward the structure. Suddenly, from behind him, he hears a sharp, but friendly "Um, hello!" He nearly jumps out of his skin until he sees it's an old dwarf wearing robes and a large hat. "Um, hi, I'm Benjamin, I apologize if I have encroached, I'm a page here." "It's always nice to have company. I'm Sylvan, the castle astronomer." "What are you doing down here?" "I'm just working on a project. But feel free to stop by any time you'd like." Thus, a friendship and mentorship began to form. Every evening Benjamin would visit Sylvan, he would bring him food and wine and they would study together.
For two long years while Benjamin trained for the cavalry, their bond grew. He learned that Father Time was dying, though Sylvan wouldn't say why or how. He was working to prevent his death and thus the death of all.
On the day of Benjamin's promotion to the cavalry, there was a ceremony and celebration, but Sylvan was nowhere to be found. After a fair amount of time, Benjamin went looking. He went down to the basement, and the handle to the hatch was warm to the touch. Fearing a fire, he rushed down. Upon reaching the bottom, he could see Sylvan, casting a spell, something involving the dial. As he approached Sylvan, he could see that he looked... older. "Get back!" Sylvan pleaded, but as his skin began to grey Benjamin reached out to him, and magic began pouring into his body. He felt himself grow, his muscles expanding and bones elongating. A bright light expanded from the dial until both Benjamin and Sylvan were immersed and as it faded, there was nothing around them anymore. The sky, if you could call it that, was the darkest blue, and they were floating.
The light diminished to a point and a voice boomed around them, "He is the sacrifice, and now you shall be the guardian." What felt like an explosion blew Benjamin back and when he woke up, he was... somewhere else. It was foggy and he was on a boat, a hooded figure sat in front of him, slowly paddling. "Am I dreaming?" He questioned aloud, dizzy. "Something like that," the hooded figure said, and he could tell it was a woman. "I am Lydia, I help those chosen like yourself cross the river." He could feel the air, heavy around him. He glanced down into the water to see he was donned in bronze armor. Just as he thought he would pass out from the weight of the air and sheer confusion, a wisp of cool air brushed past him, waking him further. "Where are we going?" It was more of a statement than a question. "To your new home at the base of Mt Opaline, in the Unforgiving Harbor. You are in the lands between, and Father brought you here to protect him and his sigil. It took much fortitude to bring the dial here, and to bestow you with eternal life. Sylvan was the guardian of the sundial, but in the mortal world, his time was bound to run out. Here, yours will not."
Ahead, through the fog, Benjamin could see a large mountain gleaming with pinks, purples, and blues, and at its base, the gold sundial. The small boat eventually slid into a tiny dock at the bottom of the mountain. Before him stood a building of bronze, with columns, a visible garden; a sprawling estate. Inside he found a library, an apothecary, a fully furnished kitchen with waitstaff, a large common area with a fire pit, and his private quarters complete with a bath overlooking the garden and sparring grounds. Here he trained, he read, he practiced the arcane arts. He learned that Father Time was not the first of the old gods to place his sigil in this realm for protection, in fact, all of the old gods held their sigils here.
As he is studying one evening, he comes across some of Sylvan's old notes. The scribbling is barely legible, as if written in a hurry. As he reads, he learns that Sylvan was not trying to save Father Time, he was trying to break the sundial, which does not keep track of time, as Benjamin had always suspected. It shows how much time Father has left, and Benjamin has been watching the sliver of light on the dial diminish for what seems like eternity at this point. The sundial isn't a clock, it's a prison, holding Father Time, and sucking the life force from every guardian deemed fit to protect it. Thus it was with all the old gods, the protector of their relics were just another sacrifice to instill the power of the gods. Sylvan thought it better that time unravel than to watch more men and women slowly kill themselves in his servitude. He was sacrificing himself to stop the cycle when Benjamin interrupted. This information enraged Benjamin. His mentor and best friend was simply a pawn in a long game that no one would win.
Benjamin took his knowledge of the arcane arts and began to expand it, mastering the fields of frost, illusion, and necromancy. He developed a plan to stop time. No more sacrifices. No more wars. No more disease or strife. Just the universes still, and at peace. He needs the relics of 3 of the old gods; Mother Void, Kaleb the Son of Light, and Marinda the god of Nature, who had since been sealed away after being reclaimed from the demi god Willow. Acquiring Mother Void's sigil involved passing through Cleo's realm and into a directionless black night, timeless and cold. The Son of Light would be no easier, brazenly placed atop Mt Vernidad. The tallest and most treacherous mountain in the lands in between, it was infested with guards and traps meant to deter any brave enough to attempt the trek. Marinda's soul jar lie in the Valley of the Fog, where several "defeated" gods and demi gods are kept. Guarded by specters and spirits and Lucinda, the Gravekeeper, this would be no easy task either.
Determined to avenge his friend and stop time, Benjamin sets out on his journey to defeat and defy the gods, convinced that a peaceful nothing is better than the chaos and strife of life.

The Sundial Knight sounds neat - what's their story?
