“Think of every fairy-tale villainess you've ever heard of. Think of the wicked witches, the evil queens, the mad enchantresses. Think of the alluring sirens, the hungry ogresses, the savage she-beasts. Think of them and remember that somewhere, sometime, they've all been real.
I assume that this quote means that you have read the Dresden Files, which leads me to guess that you based the good winter fey off the winter knight from the latest books (Changes and onward.) Clever! One alternative could be more 4e, where the winter court was good, a more holidays with good food, friends and family type feel, up until something split them off, turning them cruel, with only a few sticking with the "Old ways"

There are things I like in the Dresden books, regarding Fey, for sure, but no, the good winter Fey are just based on disliking simplicity. So, there are evil summer fey, and there are good winter Fey, and simplicity is a lie. 😃
The thing where the fey, especially werewolves, defend the world from far realm monsters is influenced a bit by Dresden, but also by IRL folk lore, specifically the Benendanti of Europe. Specially the werewolf part comes from there and Irish myth.
Paid work is busy right now, because it's 100+ outside and I work in Autoparts, which means this stuff has fallen behind. I am still working on it, though!
Posted some updates to some of the top posts! I should probably put a spoiler tag in the City of Night for better readability of the thread, but I have other projects to work on today, as well, so it will have to wait.
Let me know what you think!
Also! I'm still working on an updated writeup of Shadar-kai and Vryloka. I'm not super happy with the Mordenkeinen's version of S-K, but I'm pretty close to a version I do like. I simplified the Vryloka a bit, as well, and cleaned up the language of their abilities. With the ability for people to comment on homebrew stuff directly, I'll probably post them pretty soon, along with my Satyr, Pixie, and probably a Gnoll race.
I wonder if there is any interest in a Darkling race? Perhaps as a variant Goblin? Also, I've thoughts on Quicklings, and a new race of small creatures with brachiating (apelike) climbing movement, bonus to strength and dex/int, and maybe wood elf level speed? Their whole thing basically would be incredible speed, small size, surprising strength, making them scary ambushers who are very hard to pin down, and can live in treelines.
Thank you very much! I'll give you some of my thoughts and ramble a bit about what I've been thinking about and working on when it comes to the fey later on. Mostly I've been exploring my interpretation of the gloaming court. I didn't realize at first that Vryloka had vampiric heritage, which is interesting because the Raven Queen seems to want to destroy all undead, so that's something I've skipped over. (how much do vampires count as undead? Neutral or good alligned vampires might be an interesting idea to toy with.)
I've been thinking Gremlins will be the goblinoids of the fey in my universe, but I don't know if there's much actual D&D presence of Gremlins.
I was under the impression Mordenkeinen's was not released yet. Sounds like you got an advance copy somehow. Good for you!
Either way, I'm loving your interpretation and looking forward to see how it all shapes up.

Thank you!
I actually hadn’t gotten ahold of Mordenmeinen’s until yesterday! Most of the dnd lore in the thread is drawn from previous editions, lore from DDB interviews of Crawford and Mearls, Lore You Should Know segments of the Dragontalk podcast, etc.
The 4e days had new lore for the dnd worlds on a super regular basis, with hundreds of issues of Dragon and Dungeon magazines. Each one had a ton of lore, and some amount of crunch. The Shadowfell and Feywild were both explored extensively in those articles, not to mention the info in the books, Heroes of The Feywild, Heroes of Shadow, and The Shadowfell: Gloomwrought and Beyond.
Gremlins: that could be fun! What exactly do you have in mind for them?
Vryloka: RQ hates intelligent undead, but Vryloka aren’t actual undead, and tend to share her feelings on actual undead. Also, RQ doesn’t care about ideological consistency, so much as she cares about eliminating necromancy and things like vampires and liches. For instance, she is happy to employ revenants to hunt down other undead, and also IIRC doesn’t care about zombies and skeletons that much, because they aren’t bypassing death like a vampire or lich does, or robbing someone of their death like what happens to a ghoul or shadow or wraith.
I’d say that a good or neutral vampire could serve the Raven Queen, but earner her trust might be difficult, and they’d likely be expected to give up immortality at some point.
Anyway, I’ve got more thoughts percolating through my head for this thread, and I’ll explore them soon.
I want to detail at least one location, faction, and NPC, and potential PC, for each “area” of the top posts. So, Winter Court, Summer, Gloaming, a crossing village, etc, like I’ve done (tho I’m not done) with Night.
I'd love to see some of those sources. I've heard a bit about those magazines in passing, and it looks like previous editions have a lot of lore that I'd be interested in, I'm just not sure where to start. There's so much detail about the traditional D&D settings, and that's one of the reasons I've never run anything in the established universes. It's interesting to see what's baked into the system itself, and what's been adapted from the various worlds.
I definitely don't have anything super concrete in mind for Gremlins, but I figured, much like the Eladrin, they'd be the Fey Ancestors of Goblins (rather than elves). Unlike their mortal brethren, their features are much more narrow and angular, rather than the flat wide faces of Goblins. With exceptionally long, droopy noses, large triangular ears, and long, spindly limbs.
One of the sources I'm using, a guide published online to somebody else's FeyWild talks a bit about their version of it. Gremlins are abundant in the wild places of the Feywild and in both the lands of Summer and Winter. They are the most common fey, serving as the most abundant soldiers of both Summer and Winter during conflicts and making up most of the Wild Hunt and the vassals of other independent lords and ladies.
Interestingly enough, my setting has 'The Goblin King' as the established Monarch of the Korreds of Svartelfheim, a leprechaun-esque fey, and they were first encountered in-game as subterranean workers who sung a raunchy and absurd rendition of "Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho."
I seem to have completely lost my train of thought, so I'll post again soon. I'll keep an eye on the thread and try to stay updated with the goings on.
I got a promotion at work, which is great, but also more work, and I've also been fired up about work on my own game-world that I'm building, because it's about 3/4 of the way toward a playtest document that a GM could run entirely without my help, which is a huge milestone.
But I will dig back into this soon. No year long wait, this time.
Damn dude you've got a lot of talent. Can't wait to read more on this. Actually been looking for a way to incorporate the Feywild and the Courts and stuff more into a campaign I'm running (specifically the Winter Court with the QoA&D) cause one of my PC's made the mistake of creating a Warlock with a Fay pact and didn't specify which Archfey. If you have any other posts and such about the Feywild and such I'd love to know about them.

Oh. I did not know about those stories. I'm impressed by the lore you know about.

Any thoughts on making a homebrewery "compendium"? Happy to help out whenever you've finished a section.
I suck at homebrewery, but I am working on a plaintext document.
