So my Character has a certain traumatic past that deals with the drow. She’s a wood elf cleric but with an interesting background. Part of her background is knowing one language other than Elvish and Common. I’m trying to decide what would make the most sense canon wise for the cap,Paige. I’m torn between the following:
- Abyssal
- Infernal
- Undercommon
My DM did tell me that knowing Infernal, Abyssal and Undercommon would be very relevant to the campaign. However, for good reasons, they did not tell me which one would be the most useful. They did say that Abyssal & Undercommon are in the top 2. But again, refused to say which one will be the most useful.
If someone was hunting for a certain race like the drow, my first instinct was Undercommon because that is the language they (the drow) speak. However, Abyssal and Infernal is the language of demons and devils. I’m trying not to meta but, the party came across a book about Lolth written in Abyssal. My character knows this because the party said it in a meeting. Additionally, Elvish alphabet is used in the Undercommon language. For Infernal, that is the script for Abyssal.
I also plan on taking the feat prodigy (2 skills, 1 language, 1 proficiency) when we level up again. (We are at level 7)
I don’t if I should lean to Undercommon, Abyssal or Infernal. Like I said, I’m having a hard time deciding. The character, though, is determined to find a certain drow and bring them to justice. (The alignment is chaotic good but crossovers to neutral territory)
So much of the answer to this depends on the plans the DM has, which you don't know. Without overthinking things, if your character has a past experience with the drow, it might be reasonable to speak Undercommon. That is something you do have control over as you create your character's backstory. I would keep it simple rather than a guess in the dark.
Undercommon - The general public. But that will require great wealth and tapping into the black market areas.
Abyssal - The void bearers. It would get you the equips you need to challenge the most dangerous of enemies.
Infernal - If your evil, this would be the best path, leading you the demiurges. A tough set of battles, but at least the path would be the easiest.

This statement is meant to be both provocative and condescending. Look at these pathetic huddled masses in their private and closed games, cringing behind the policy of no homebrews and no custom content. This is an insult and injury even to fire types. HEED THIS! Your better off playing rpgmaker. It's everything this place wants to be when it grows up. Seriously. Otherwise, good luck, they will overdo things. All because of safety and security... kor.
Undercommon is most likely. But abyssal is more interesting. Drow align with tanar'ri and not baatezu due to chaotic alignment. So infernal (lawful) doesnt seem likely.
The exception is contracts. Baatezu excel in these, and i see lower planar using this as language of choice for deals. Espedcially for yugoloths. But your milelage will vary on my opinion
Okay so first, thank you guys so much!! This was really helpful! It actually made me think of some questions to ask the DM and thanks to that, I choose Abyssal.
Her hunting of that certain drow has been less than 5 years. Plus, up until that point she only had experience with other fiends (demons). I’ll keep you guys updated for sure how it works out. She is “currently” learning the language of Undercommon now. After all, it’s important to know the language your enemy speaks.
I might take the linguist fest so I can learn Infernal and celestial but we shall see. Thanks again you guys!!! This helped so much!

Could really use some help! Thanks!

I say Undercommon would seem to make the most sense with your character hunting for drow. But they are all good choices, good luck!

Drow speak elvish. Duergar speak Dwarvish. Deep Gnomes speak Gnomish.
Undercommon is a common 'universal' language used by several races of the underdark.
