I am thinking of creating an Aasimar Celestrial Warlock with the following backstory.
The direct descendent of one of the greatest hero paladins (say of Tyr), he was born an Aasimar, the first in his family for 4 generations. His family continued to worship Tyr and he fully expected he must be an Aasimar for a reason and He would be chosen to serve Tyr as a Paladin himself. However in his teenage years he developed a muscle wasting disease meaning he was nowhere near strong enough to wear heavy armour and while his speed of movement was OK for a common person he couldn't avoid blows often enough to fight in melee combat wearing only light armour. This resulted in him feeling useless to be able to serve Tyr and angry at Him for allowing him to get this disease. He was then approached by an angel of Mystra (a suitable magic God?) that if he served Her he would become a great hero.
Would accepting such a pact mean complete rejection of Tyr or is it viewed possible to serve 2 Gods?
In general would people be surprised, distrustful or even aggressive to someone who changes their God?
There are plenty of people who worship more than 1 god. As long as the gods goals don't clash and try to pull the individual in multiple directions, they would be okay. In this scenario, I would assume that your character would serve Mystra and only worship Tyr since he isn't a paladin of Tyr. It's hard to serve a deity that doesn't give you commands, but he can still worship and follow the teachings of Tyr and serve Mystra at the same time. This is possible because Mystra and Tyr are both good deities and only a step away from each other and worship of 1 won't impact the other. It would be hard for someone to worship Tyr and serve Torm who would be in direct relation to Tyr, or to worship Tyr and serve say Mask who is at the other end of the alignment spectrum and who wants you to steal things. Stealing would be against the teaching of Tyr who stands for justice.
I doubt people would be surprised that someone changes gods, because they may feel abandoned by their current god so moves to another. Worship of multiple gods is generally accepted due to each god standing for something different.
Hope this helps.
