The Ed Greenwood made a post on Twitter asking (or replying) to the question of types of music in Forgotten Realms. Namely Rock and Metal. I thought this was interesting, and it spurred my imagination a bit.
Rock and Metal are my go-to genres. If we look into history as far back as Medieval times; they had Minstrels/Bards etcetera that utilized music in their performances mainly. Along with the story-telling in their songs, and epic poetry that we still have around today. Obviously, there was no real "magic" that took place here (however much I refuse to believe there is no magic in the world) but in Forgotten Realms, things are a little bit different. See, I love old-timey sounding Medieval music. The Rebec, lyre, psaltry, cittern and all those lovely string instruments sound great to my musician's ears.
Metal and rock utilize amplified, sometimes overdriven guitar tones to deliver the punch that is standard in those types of music. My mind was spurred by the idea of having amplification in the Forgotten Realms. Mr. Greenwood says that the type of music may have been what we would call "Progressive Rock" today, I would go further, and maybe add in "Progressive Metal" as well (think Rush, Dream Theatre, Opeth, Mastodon in later years, etc.)
The question!
Would Thaumaturgy/prestidigitation be able to amplify the effects of a lute if used as a spellcasting focus?
Would the bard or musician in your party be able to deliver those epic face-melters with the use of thaumaturgy/prestidigitation?
Prestidigitation can only create faint musical notes as an instantaneous effect. In my book that would be at most a few notes like someone was hitting keys on a keyboard.
Thaumaturgy can either make your voice loud for up to a minute or create an instantaneous sound.
So neither of these spells would work for what you are wanting to do, if I may...
Amp Level: Cantrip Casting Time: 1 action Duration: 1 hour Range: Touch Components: V,S Damage/Effect: Utility This spell is a minor magical trick that many bards and their stagehands know. Music produced by an instrument or the singing done by an individual while under the effect of this spell carries three times as far. A caster can have up to three instances of this spell running simultaneously.

In one of our campaigns that take place in Midgard, i play an Iron Wailler ( a BArd of Metal), with his Thunder Lute( Rune of Thunder from the Kobold press deep magic supplement; Rune magic).
His objective is to find the powerfull Artefact, the Pick of Destiny...
(Yeah i'm basicaly playing him as Jack Black in Tenacious D and the PoD and/or Eddie Riggs in Brutal legend).
Using YT links to metal songs to supplement the spell castings, (for Dissonant Whispers i Use the opening riff of Judas Priest-Painkiller, for Sleep i use Enter Sandman, Vicious Mockery?, then last bit of Master of Puppets when they break into maniacal laughter...).
Its fun, its an experience, the RP is that Heavy Metal is a new way for the Gods to enter in communion with the Mortals and bestow to them their Boons, my character received Visions of the PoD from Wotan, who he also call him; Dio (Dio can you hear me, i'm lost and so alone, i'm asking for your Guidance, won't you come down from your Plane, I need a Patron to teach me How to Rock, my Father's think Metal is evil, but he can suck a ...)

I was actually thinking of creating a bard only oneshot with a heavy metal theme. Most of the encounters are famous bands, roadies and fans, that they either need to impress or defeat. I got the idea while at a Manowar concert recently.
