What is your party’s legacy outside of the main quest. How has the parties interaction shaped the world and when they are gone what will they leave behind. It doesn’t have to be at the end of a campaign.
for my party we created a new town (gorgons keep).
Kinda both. When we played Dark Sun the DM basically threw us in the city of Tyr right after the slave revolt and said “Have fun. Do whatever you want.” So by default we ended up getting involved in a mass uprising to overthrow the rest of the sorcerer-kings.
My players have killed a chimera that was terrorizing a major city. But they also started an equine revolution in another city. So I guess it evens out to about a net zero gain.

In a old DoIP adventure I played, we killed the Dragon, then I made a Blood Hunter char that was sent to kill the dragon, found it was dead, went back to headquarters and found that the order had disappeared, and now he’s off to get lost in the world, and hopefully find out what happened to the order.

On Dark Sun we overthrew the reign of the sorcerer-kings
Was that a main quest or did the players seek that on their own?

There were like little missions on the side but there was no main quest except what we made for ourselves.
-overthrew the goverment
-overthrew another goverment
-made a walk in clinic
-overthrew another goverment
-founded a new religion
-they might be into the whole overthrowing the goverment thing
-set off a nuke in some random town
-caused a global pandemic
-helped a small nation conquer one of the nations they overthrew the goverment of
-then overthrew the goverment of the small (now much bigger) nation
needless to say my players are forces of chaos

We somehow went from just wanting to get a cool flying ship to go on random quest to find magic items....to killing Asmodeus.
To be fair, he tried to start another war of Gods vs Primordials so he had it coming.

My party built a hippie commune after they failed to prevent a mining city from being destroyed by elves.
