Greek mythology is probably responsible for more types of D&D monsters than any other single source.
Although some, like Gorgons, have very little resemblance to their mythological origins.
[Tooltip Not Found] are closer to the Colchis Bulls than the Gorgons of Greek Mythology, which are now Medusas, but are more just clones of THE Medusa than the Gorgons.
Yeah it says in MOoT that medusas are called gorgons in the setting, which makes sense
So... it's not so much that Centaurs are messed up but that the ancient Greeks had some really weird ideas about biology.
There was a campaign where the captain of the guard also liked to experiment on and torture so-called "monsters" (anything not "beast" or "humanoid" regardless of the individual's alignment). I'm sure that weirdo could explain the D&D anatomy of such beings as Centaurs (which are considered "monstrosities"). Time for some exploratory surgery?
I wonder what a Dryder's anatomy is...

I think the Hydra has lungs and a heart in each neck. And an infinite amount of blood and blood pressure medication.

In a comic, the Bard and Rogue kept lopping off heads until its blood pressure was so low that the Hydra just passed out. (3.5e comic) (EDIT: They were doing it because it was fun, not because they had to do it. Lop off a head, and *pop*, two more! Cool! Right?)

I wonder what a Dryder's anatomy is...
Yeah, the greeks definitely had some weird ideas on biology. You know the origin story of the Minotaur? Or how Aphrodite was born?
Driders are definitely way more messed up than Centaurs. How the heck would the spider and drow's circulatory/blood system work? How do they breathe? Do they have lungs, the holes in their exoskeleton to absorb oxygen, or both? How do their bites do poison damage?

The Minotaur was born when Zeus slept with King Minos’s wife in the form of a white bull and Aphrodite was born when Zeus’s blood (or possibly other fluids) was spilled in the sea foam off the island of Cythera.
Not Zeus the first time, it was just a bull sent to them by Posiedon, IIRC. Not Zeus for the second one either, that was Ouranos, and it wasn't his blood.

Okay, you’re right about the bull. And I was keeping it PG rated by saying blood. I know what it really was. But are you sure it was Ouranos? I thought for sure it was Zeus.

It was Ouranos. Four titans bound his limbs down while Chronus sliced and diced him with a sickle and threw his bits into the ocean.

The trials of Heracles were basically their version of a soap opera.
"We open on demigod, living at home with his wife and children, pretending to be an average Greek citizen. PLOT TWIST! An evil goddess of bovines and matrimony possesses him and makes him kill his whole family! Things are looking bad for Heracles, he just killed his family against his will, and is imprisoned because of the crimes he did not commit. He is now sent by his cousin to do a set of obscure hazardous tasks with no pay. He has to spend years as a slave doing ten tasks, travelling across Greece killing monsters, hooking up with girls/monsters, and meeting deities and titans. He finally finishes his tasks and PLOT TWIST! HE got help on two of his tasks, so he isn't given his freedom. He has to go do two more tasks, going to the dark and scary Underworld to kidnap a three-headed puppy and pick an apple guarded by a snake (sorry, I mean dragon. Wrong religious story). He finally gains his freedom and has a family again but PLOT TWIST! A centaur from 3 seasons back apparently gave his wife some of his blood to put on Heracles's robes if she thought he was cheating on her. She puts it on his robes, thinking it will make him love her, but apparently centaur blood is deadly acid, so Heracles dies and becomes a god."

Dragon Magazine did an article on the anatomy of hydras once. At that point (3.0 rules), the beast had a single set of lungs, a single heart, and a single brain, all located in its torso. The heads only had sensory organs.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
I’m gonna sound like a real idiot, but idk enough about blood pressure to get the joke. Can someone explain it to me?
The hydra kept growing two new heads and necks every time the characters cut one off. Eventually it reached the point where its heart couldn't keep up with the added blood vessels and lost consciousness.

Oh
That actually wasn’t exactly what I was thinking. But cool. Thank you. Idk that. So Aphrodite was the daughter of Ouranos, not Zeus.
It depends on the myth. But, yes, in a way Not really technically the "daughter" of Ouranos, but kind of. In some myths, she is the daughter of Zeus.
