Have you created your own character's deities and if so what did you go with?
Listed below is the deity I created for my Cleric, Vall a malformed wood elf banished to another world as a result of trying to prevent the kingdom of Rothenel being swapped with its double in the Shadowfell.
Kestra
Vestige Goddess of Moonlight
Clergy are known as the Followers of Kestra or in the case of her martial followers as the Knights of Kestra or Kestran Knights.
Name: Kestra (also known as "Big Sis" or "Big Sister")
Portfolio: Moonlight
Depiction: Either as a Lantern Archon or taking the appearance of a ghostly elven female.
Title: Celestial Archon in the service of Sehanine Moonbow
Domain: Knowledge, Twilight
Alignment: NG (Worshipper's alignments vary but Cleric's and Paladin's are Good aligned)
Symbols and Books: A Small vial of holywater worn on a simple string necklace or the emblem of a vial depicted on a staff, shield or weapon usually Moon touched blades, Long Swords, Short Swords and Daggers.
Worshipers and Temples: Very few the only known Temple is somewhere within the Feywild accessible to followers via a shrine dedicated to Kestra.
Shrines are rare but were being established recently so far the oldest known date back about 50 years or so.
Demands/Obedience: "Be Good" is predominant, the usual time for prayer is at night when there is a moon in sight, dawn or sunset is the other alternative unless underground then employing the Light cantrip to simulate moonlight suffices.
Vanity: Has a nasty sense of humor, notorious troublemaker has kicked open the divine gates to confront greater gods such as the Dawnfather and the Wildmother when they've been caught off guard after a church or cathedral of theirs has been co-opted by an evil cult.
Other Gods: Annoying vestige deity, looked upon with fondness by the elven gods including Lolth who looks upon Kestra as a favored daughter especially the numerious times she has got into her former husbands face over his antics. Conversely Corellon actually likes his upstart daughter who has proven more entertainment than his other children have been able to cause. This is also why she serves Sehanine Moonbow who as the Moonweaver keeps a careful eye on her little niece.
Legend: When the Regalia of Chaos was first created the entity known as Kestra was born, bound to the Orb of Resolve thus prevented from entering heaven and thus free of the Divine Gates influence that keep the other gods away from the mortal world.
Kestra is fiercely protective of most of the races and her principal worshipers are her Followers there was even an Order of Knights called the Knights of Kestra or Kestran Knights but its most recent incarnation have been rebuilt into the Free Knights of Rothenel currently led by the Fallen Aasimar Gabriel Flynn.
Ironically he is a follower of the Everlight who are friendly towards the Order due to the actions of the Blue Lady during the Tiefling Warlock Uprising.
He was a Wizard's apprentice who accepted a Pact of Darkness was transformed into a Tiefling and bore the Crown of Rulership almost seizing complete control of the former Wood Elf Kingdom of Rothenel until confronted by the infamous Exile so feared by the Wood Elves.
The Blue Lady a travelling healer helped repel the Tiefling and his army successfully stripping him of the artefact he used to dominate his army thus causing that force to fall apart and allow the defenders of the realm to retake the kingdom.
Eventually even restoring the throne as a new King was found who could draw forth the fabled Blade of Rulership from its place within the Palace of Gilieam.
Notes: Kestra is still a vestige deity in terms of power her influence stems from the fierce devotion her Followers show her and this influence has now extended beyond Exandria regardless of how few actually know about her.
A Celestial Archon in service of Sehanine Moonbow she is a member of the Celestial Bureaucracy which is comprised of all of the Celestial Archons in the Outer Planes and messing with one can have alarming consequences as they are fiercely protective of their extended family.
Now how about introducing your own deity?
For those interested this was largely worked out with the help of a video on youtube by Theplayerofx I recommend taking a look as I found it very helpful.
I kind of made it for a character, though I was the DM:
Exiris, God of Fear and Madness
Exiris rules over the domains of insanity, and delights in the madness of a broken mind.
Name: Exiris
Portfolio: Madness
Depiction: An vaguely humanoid shape made of darkness.
Title: Master of Shattered Minds, Lord of the Broken Chains
Domain: Knowledge, Tempest
Alignment: CE (Some of his worshippers are NE, most are insane)
Symbol: An inverted black star in a silver circle.
Worshippers and Temples: Most of Exiris' worshippers are insane, and those who aren't hunger for knowledge and power, things that Exiris can provide. The few temples and shrines to him are hidden carefully, since his followers are often condemned to death.
Legend: It is said that Exiris came into being alongside the first star, he its dark reflection, its inverted image. He is feared among gods and mortals alike, for few can withstand the utter insanity of his very presence.
All stars fade. Some stars forever fall. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Homebrew (Mostly Outdated):Magic Items,Monsters,Spells,Subclasses ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If there was no light, people wouldn't fear the dark.
I have created a monotheistic cult that believe the pantheon are all splinters of the same single god. One of my players has taken on the idea of joining this religion the cult is split into 9 factions each represents and worships one of the aspects of the deity (one of the alignments). This means that the same god can have lawful good and lawful evil members. Overall the cult believes its goal is to combine the different splinters to reform the one true god. The factions are kept equal in size ensuring no one aspect overrides the others but there is also internal strife between them over the methods each applies to complete this.
What this has allowed and allows is a cleric or paladin to shift alignment moving from one faction to another. It also creates some great moments as the cleric has to pro alongside other members of a different alignment for the greater goal.
It's just a patron sort of deity that one of my characters serves, although it'd have to get DM approved:
Name: Hamon Portfolio: Storms Image: A rather golden, skeletal like beast with great claws on his feet and massive wings, and bony sort of hand that acts as a shield in need with clawed thumbs with almost a draconic-like skull Domain: Thunder, Ice Title: Lord of Striking Thunder Alignment: Neutral Evil Followers and Temples: If any, very few and far between and principally dragonborn and no known temples, lost to time and the elements Legend: It is said that once, in the days of their youth the dragonborn worshipped a trio of entities known only as the Sacred Beasts and that Hamon was among them, taking offerings of souls and servitude in exchange for power over storm-related magic. The chief servants of these three were known as The Emissary of Thunder, the Emissary of Phantasms and the Emissary of Searing Flames. But over time their power diminished and waned until it was almost nothing due to a lack of worshippers. Yet during the fiercest of storms the dragonborn shiver for an unknown reason although some claim to hear a howl of rage in the winds, crying 'Hamon' only to fade into nothingness.
Maybe your character took shelter in a cliff top ruin unaware it was once a bastion to their deity.
Discovering evidence of its past they find themselves walking inside and eventually find a route ascending to the very top of a tower that looks precarious but is actually still perfectly stable and there at the very top they receive a vision from their deity.
Maybe a vision of the three deities and their worshipers before a depiction of some future peril for example a group of mortals from various races taking up the masks made from the deceased faces of slain dragons putting them on and after a ritual they suddenly merge and assume the form of the fearsome Tiamat heralding a new era with a cataclysm only the surviving followers of the Sacred Beasts can prevent...
Probably want to replace them or be one of the worshipers summoning their deity to this plane of existence?
Well the story with my character is that he's a dragonborn but not a normal one - he was grown in a lab and given wings like a dragonkin - and when he escaped the lab one night, he wandered without food or anything and was on death before Hamon essentially twists his arm into serving him by offering him salvation - and since he had either that option or die, he obviously takes it - and then Hamon gave him a cryptic message "When thunder strikes, your path begins" - and my general idea, should the DM approve of it, is that he becomes the new Emissary of the Sacred Beasts to bring them back to their former strength or start re-introducing them among the dragonborn as deities - and the other two Sacred Beasts are Raviel, Lord of Phatasms and Uria Lord of Searing Flames - although that would sort of come into play later once his patron gives him a little more to go on than a single sentence and leaving with him a medallion depicting a bat-winged thudnerbolt P.S. if you'd like to get a better look at what they appear, look them up on Google Images - they're Yugioh cards I thought would make pretty good patrons/deities to warlocks or followers
