I have a character in one of my campaigns who has quite a bit of darts, and this made me wonder if it would be viable to have a dart-based build?

Thrown darts with Sharpshooter are very viable! You’ll want both Archery and Thrown Weapon fighting styles, so be prepared to take a feat, splash a second martial class, or be a champion. The ability to be a close-range Sharpshooter wielding a Shield, ideally exerting secondary effects as a Battlemaster, is a niche that has a few advantages over conventional bow Battlemasters. But it can also be a fun alternative for a Kensai, or a Rogue, or other Fighters etc.
