I just want to show him that Bob damaging spells can be quite useful in a battle. So with this item he will be force to think outside the box. The rival is not really hard to beat but direct magic damage will make the fight harder
The best anti-magic magic item is the Ring of Spell Storing. With it, you can cast Counterspell without the enemy able to Counterspell you back. Or any 5th or below spell, for that matter.
Otherwise, Iron Bands to trap mages (who are generally poor physical stat types) in Silence fields or Fog Clouds.
Worth noting that ALMOST ALL magic items can’t be Counterspelled, so go ham. Staff of Power and just Wall of Force the BBEG and make them use their main action or LA to escape it.
Against player mages, the Ring, Staff, and Bands can be utterly devastating for the exact same reasons.
My main is an Abjurer that unfortunately for the DM has also come into possession of a Staff of Power so yikes.
Can confirm that spell resistance is outright the single most obnoxious thing for save-heavy casters and the main reason that my level 19 wizard uses very few.

I don't know what level they are but you can have a bit of fun putting a spectator against a spellcaster
